Default Some music stores can really rip you off!

I just went to the music store and my brother who plays drums went to buy a new bass drum head. My brother went over to the drum section and saw the Remo Black Dot with an Evans bass drum patch for $61 but for 60% off Since he is a double-kick drummer, he wanted a double bass patch which is longer than a regular patch. The guy took off the patch that was originally on the drum head and got the longer one which is supposed to be $12(That's if you buy it seperately). But since he took off the one that was originally on the bass head he should not have to pay the extra $12 for another. It should come with it. When the guy was taking off the 60% the other man who was helping was like," oh wait its not supposed to 60% its 40%."(stupid liers) Anyways the bill came out to like $44. FOR A DRUM HEAD. My brother said that he could find it online for like $30 and no shipping fees either. So finally the guy took off 60% and didn't charge extra for the longer patch. The bill came out to about $36.(which is still kind of a lot for a drum head) Anyways some people can be real jerks. They think that people don't do their homework for their gear and just pay whatever. And my brother's had other problems with that store in the past. I just think a lot of music stores can really try and rip you off and I definately buy more online for that reason. I'm sorry if I sound angry. Any comments?

The best thing to do is to get to know the music store employees and owner. I have found this to be true (rip-offs) by people who just go and spend out of desperation.
Anyway, I think this thread will get more answers and comments in the Musicians Corner.

Know what ya mean man. It pretty much is better and cheaper to buy online. I do agree with Brew though, getting to know the guys at the music store is a good thing. Sometimes if not most you can get some pretty good deals. Worked for me!

I have never bought any gear online. I have to see it and try it out first, then make a decision.

if I know exactly what I need, I get it online, everything else, I use guitar center and guitar center only. I had a lot of connections when I lived in Colorado, so when I moved to Texas, I immidiately established my self at the local store as someone who would spend money if I was treated right.

when they look up my past records, they never hesitate to give me a great price. Just let them know exactly what you are willing to spend (do your research of course)

example, I bought a BBE sonic maximizer the other day, I asked if they would still honor their holiday price, because that was about $10 less then mail order. He said sure, I notced when I got home, he took off another $10 on top of that.

The only time I will go to a music store is to try something out or experiment with it if i dont know what its like. For example, If I am going to buy a drum head that i have used in the past and liked, there is no reason for me to go to a music store and buy it. Theres nothing i need to experiment with it. I am simply just replacing it.

But, if I am going to buy a drumset or possibly a cymbal, thats something you want to buy at a music store simply the fact that you want to try it out and see how it sounds.(experiment with it)

So far I have bought most things online just so I dont get ripped off at some lame music store. Only the things that I must buy at a music store I will.

My local "guitar" store, which only mostly sells Squier-quality stuff sold me a set of strings for like $16, which is like 3 times what I pay for them at Musician's Friend. I also can't try anything out at a store because I am plagued with that southpaw thing. Online is better.

That's good and all, but, like the original post said...a lot of these guys are looking for suckers they can rip off. As far as music stores, Guitar Center is probably number one nationwide, and there are good and bad points to that. The bad...they will almost never deal with you, even if they say something is on sale...it really isn't. The good...you ain't gonna' get ripped off like you may at Joe Schmoe's music store. I personally love Musicians Friend. There is something to be said for playing the product first b4 you buy..but if you don't like it...just send it back, how can you beat that??

I look at it this way.

If I walk into the store and actually get quality service, I don't mind paying a little extra. If I can't get help or the guy gives me a high-pressure sales rutine then I don't buy anything.

I shop online at Sweetwater music, they have a great staff that I can call if I'm stuck with a technical issue.

My local music store will match Musician's Friend's prices, so I also shop there too.

I don't mind buying electronics or strings (in bulk) on line but amps and guitars must be an in-person buy. I have to hold it and hear it first. Everyone knows that you can play 50 of the same model guitar and get 50 different feels. I compare it to going to the pet shop and getting a puppy, you find the one that makes that connection.

    Can't get that online.
