    Default Ikea

Has anyone else been to one of their stores? I've been hunting for a new desk for a while, and hadn't found anything that came close to what I wanted. The pressed wood stuff at the office supply stores always seems to be made for people with little monitors who don't need much work surface. The office-grade stuff is pretty expensive for what you get.

I went to Ikea tonight for the first time. The store is huge! Frighteningly huge! I almost felt dizzy wandering through it. Think of a big maze. I actually found a desk that I like, too. It's very simple, just a large L shape without any shelves. It seems very solid, having a steel frame under the work surface. It wasn't too bad to put together, either. I spent about an hour on it. Not bad for $250!

I don't know why, but I'd always avoided Ikea in the past. Maybe it seemed a little too trendy or European.

I've also avoided Ikea in the past. Same idea that I thought it was too trendy. My wife and i are looking for some stuff so I might give Ikea another try. Thanks...

There is a store not too far from me, but I have never been in it. Every time I drive buy it, it looks like it is packed.

They're building an Ikea right at my exit, which sucks. It will be INSANE at that exit when that place opens and forever after. I'll have to drive past my house and loop back just to go home, I'm sure.

However, I do like their stuff. I've seen a couple items and browsed a catalog a while back. Good kids' stuff.

This isn't the one in Schaumburg, is it? I've been there a time or two--and will be visiting on the weekend of Jan 21. I like their stuff, but as it's been mentioned here several times--lots of stupid people wandering around with carts. Almost as scary as Wal-Mart!

    Trendy and European?
Only if by trendy you mean cheap and European you mean high volume.
I bought 2 long black tables and cornered them for my computer/ProTools
suite, which left plenty of room for an occassional (instrument) keyboard.

They also sold me on a nightstand/book rack, but I had to check back about
50 times over a month b/c they were outta stock at my local store and
would'nt 'borrow' the same item from another one of their locations way
    down in OC. C'mon Ikea.

That said, I don't expect any of this shit to last as it is all of the
aforementioned particle board variety. But in the short term (until I
move again) their stuff is very functional.

Ikea is very cheap quality but you can find some really cool things there at a decent price. I bought a TV stand there, some comforter covers, and other things.

I need to try to find some lights to illuminate the new entertainment center I bought. Thanks for the thread Mike, that reminds me to see what they have online!

The SOX are in Chicago...we just allow the Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets to use the name.

There is one in Philadelphia area that we have visited and picked up mostly storage type items. They do have a cool area in the basement where they sell cups, rugs. The items are good quality and easy to assemble. Also liked there bedroom furniture ideas for children. The swedes know how to maximize the use of furniture within a small area. Plus, they have a pretty cool play area for the kids while you shop.

Some of the stuff at IKEA is crap and some is good.

DO NOT go to IKEA on a weekend!! A ex of mine took me to one and I thought I was going to die. The isles were so cramped it wasnt even funny, you could not move!!

I actually bought some blanket thing from Ikea last year, it wasn't even for me I was just picking it up for a friend while I was in San Diego. I felt like a complete dork for some reason while I was walking around the store, plus the sandwich restaurant thing just seemed to trendy/gay for my taste. Having said all that, they do have good deals on some pretty cool looking stuff, I have no problem with the g/f bringing it home, I just won't do it myself ever again. We have this Ikea knife set that for some reason I feel the need to explain to anyone who notices it that it was a gift, I didn't actually buy it myself!

Maybe that's it. The whole cheese at at the end of the maze deal. Ha ha,
