    Default Help, amp problems!

I'm having some problems with my tube amp. It makes a very loud hissing noise that it never made before. The amp is six years old. It only makes the noise after I connect the cable to the amp. If I turn on the amp and don't connect the cable the noise isn't there. This noise continues even after the cable is unplugged. I have recently changed the tubes and have tried several different cables. Any ideas?

Try checking your tubes for a good tight connection. I re-tubed my 5150 combo recently and had cracking and popping. I pulled the power tubes and took a dental pick to squeeze the pin sockets together. This made the fit much tighter and took care of the problem. It also helps to use contact cleaner to clean the sockets for a good clean connection. You can spray it directly on the old tube's pins and put them back in the sockets and work them in and out.

I would also clean all the inputs and FX loop inputs if you have one, weird stuff often happens when these get dirty. Circuit cleaner and a q tip works well. If tubes, and inputs all check out fine. You might have a bad solder connection going on.

A few more things to think about ...

    1) broken or "open" input jack
    2) dirty input jack
    3) pull out and reinsert tubes
    4) did you rebias the amp with the new tubes?
    5) if possible, go back and reinsert the old tubes and see if the amp still hisses as badly.

Just a few more ideas to try.
