    Default On Fire

    Hello fellow Linkers!

I just listened "On Fire" from the Chicago -81 bootleg (which BTW is a magnificent concert) and realised how great this song is. Allthough being fairly simple and straight foreward, "On Fire" really has a magical feel, and the guitars are almost demonic

I just felt like saying this. Has anyone else ever had any "later awakenings" regarding any other song, if yoy know what I mean?

I know what you mean, and I have. When i began collecting shows this summer, i found out the greatness behind songs I hated before. Then I would hear live versions, and my opinions of cerstain songs changed. Here are songs I got hooked on from their live versions:

    On Fire
    Romeo Delight
    Hear About It Later
    The Full Bug
    Girl Gone Bad
    Get Up
    A.F.U. (Naturally Wired)
    Spanked
The entire "Balance" and "Van Halen III" except for "Once" and "Ballot or the Bullet"
    Up For Breakfast

Just out-of-the-blue later awakenings that came this summer/fall are:

    Fools
In A Simple Rhyme (more like Spring for this one)
    Dirty Movies
Little Guitars (LOVED it a few years ago, and then I lost interest, but it somehow just came back to me)
    Drop Dead Legs
    Inside
    Source of Infection
    In N' Out
    Baluchiterium
    Once
    Ballot or the Bullet
Learning to See (Ironically, this came to me just last week)

So i see exactly what youre saying here.

Yea, On Fire Rocks, and indeed I used to not care for it.

I also used to pain my way through Little Dreamer, and now I can't stop listening to it. Funny, ya know?

I've always liked On Fire. The version on the Zero demo is pretty cool too.

Get Greensboro 1981 and listen to it.
You will like that version even more.
    It has an extended introduction.

Yeah, "On Fire" was one I didn't care that much for until I saw them in New Haven, CT and they opened up with it on that '81 tour. I've loved it every since. The EEAS Band did a killer version on their first tour too. I remember Steve Vai putting the guitar on the floor and playing that ascending riff in the middle of the tune. Great stuff.

Had to bump this one cause the song is On Fire.

This song was the first one that jumped out at me when I first heard the album.

btw - I've always liked Little Dreamer too. The only VH song I didn't really like when it first came out was Sinner's Swing. Now I love it. Go figure.

"On Fire" is a smokin tune!!!

One song that I appreciated more was "Finish What Ya Started". I didn't care too much for the album version but live....it rocks!

"On Fire" - what a killer tune. I also like the Warner Bros. demo tape version.

on fire was one of those songs i thought was OK. Then one day I learned how to play it on guitar and I found a whole new appreciation for it. A lot of songs are like that, once you learn them it opens up a whole new window on how you hear the song.

    Ok.
Yesterday I had another "awakening": I was listening RHRN in bed before falling to sleep and something really grabbed my attention.

Namely Man On A Mission. For 15 years it's been one of my least favourit VH songs and I've usually skipped it when listening to FUCK or RHRN. However, and this is propably because I play guitar, I noticed that Eddie's playing on the live-version is STELLAR and the riffs and the fills a really catchy. The whole vibe on the guitar is very groovy and the solo, though being a fairly common "Eddie solo", fits in nicely and highlights the tune.

It's amazing how one can notice stuff like this after 15 years of listening..
