Default What guitar would you buy?

If you wanted to dial in on the sound Eddie got on that first album and you didn't want to get involved with dropping in new pickups and doing modifications?

I would love to find a guitar that gets that kind of sound but that you can by right off the shelf. I see a lot of guys here talking about Wolfgangs and Charvels and sometimes Kramers.

I really like the look of the stratocaster style body and I don't really care about a fancy finish.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Boy thats a tough one because you cant really get eddies sound from the new album with a off the rack guitar because his guitars were never off the rack. its pretty hard to find a strat body with an all maple neck, 1 humbucker and 1 volume knob--anywhere. You might have to just buy a strat, and drop a humbucker in there.

BOISE STATE BRONCOS! - They're awesome. Deal with it!

11/16/04 - VAN HALEN in Boise, Idaho. Changed my life forever

8/8/06 - Sammy Hagar and the Wabos w/Michael Anthony in Boise, Idaho. Sam and Mike still kick ass

Im not going to make a sales pitch but Get yourself a nice archtop wolfgang with a 5150 amp with a few choice stomp boxes ( not the combo boxes with every sound on the planet)and you are there..

The most important thing to have is....Well ... if you know how to play edds style it will be his sound on anything you play. The equiptment helps but you need the edd style....:Joe

How about the Charvel Art Series? Those look pretty nice although a bit expensive.

Check out Mean Street guitars... although if you are trying to capture Ed's tone from the 1st album you're going to need more than just a certain guitar. That tone is a combination of Ed's homemade axe, a few old pedals, that Marshall amp & speakers... then most importantly... Ed's hands. But for cheap... any half decent guitar and POD with the VH settings will get you close enough.

When I think of 1st album tone, I don't think of Wolfgang pickups.

Yeah, you're right. But you can't go wrong with a Wolfgang for Eddie's all-around sound and versatility. If you're wanting to peg their debut accurately, whatever you play will have to be modified, IMHO.

I don't care about pegging it 100%. I just want to get closer than my current VH guitar which is a Jackson Professional. I'm not big on doing guitar modifications and would much rather buy something off the shelf that already plays well and sounds great as is.

I've already got the amp and stomp boxes covered.

    Thanks for the feedback.
