    Default Soooo, which Pickup?

    Ok-
I know this has been brought up somewhere before, but I'm gonna ask it...

I'm building up my replica of Eddie's "Unchained" Guitar. Looking into the pickups, I've seen sooooo many people comment on which PU "they" think it is. The list has quite a few-Duncan '59, '59 plus, Custom Custom, the custom shop E.V.H., go with the tembucker version, don't worry about the trembucker version...I have even had people tell me to try a Gibson PU! The list goes on and on. So here goes, with so many to pick from, which one should I go for? Thanks guys! -Red43j
Eddie must think I'm a BOZO to want to drop THAT much on one of his new Charvel Guitars!

the unchained guitar is pretty obscure. it hasnt been as analyzed as the frankie or 5150 since it was just used on one tour.

if anything my guess would be it was something similar to what he was using in the frankie at the time.

people have posted that eddie was using a hybrid pick up that was made from 2 differnt coils , from a duncan 59 and a duncan custom i beleive. then he changed to something else after the fair warning tour. he even had a differnt pick up in the frankie during the wacf tour(it had white bobbins).

maybe he put that in the unchained guitar.

simply put eddie never fully tells the truth about his gear and has had alot of differnt pick ups in his hand built guitars.

    go with your ears.

heres a few models people use/discuss: duncan jb , duncan custom, duncan custom custom, duncan 1978 , duncan evh , duncan 59 , duncan distortion , and the mythical duncan hybrid pick up some people talk about.

What body wood are you using? A Dimarzio Virtual Hot PAF sounds sweet in a Ash bodied Strat, so does the Duncan Custom Custom and I`m betting the EVH custom shop would sound killer. A Duncan 59 or Blues Trembucker works great in a Alder bodied Strat. Thing to remember is the mids will be more pronounced in a Alder bodied guitar.

    Hey-
I went with Alder. Have the Maple neck going on as well. The Jack will be on the front (as it was with the guitar). Its routed for a Floyd (anyone wanna sell me one-chromed?). Shaller tuners are gonna wind up on it...thanks-Red43j

Yep, you can come without shouting distance of Eddie's tones with any of those pickups, provided you've made the right "compensations" for each model. It depends on your amp, if you're using an EQ, and also your right hand technique as well.

My recommendations are slightly "meatier" and more brown than a Duncan '59:

    Duncan '78 (formerly the E.V.H.)
    Gibson '57 Classic Plus
    DiMarzio Virtual Hot PAF
a Duncan "hybrid" (not because he used it, but because it works!)

My personal recommendation is to use a SD Screamin' Demon Trembucker. It's hot, it's f spaced, it has good highs and a nice growl to it. I don;t think the Gibson pickups have the harmonic content (at least the 4 that I have owned did not). I am actually getting a custom wind by High Order pickups that I am going to give a try.

Regarding Duncan's, in my Les Paul, last year I tried a Pearly Gates, a Custom 5, a JB and a '59. I kept the '59. Personal opinion of course.

I swear by Duncan Customs and I think they get pretty damn close.

The Custom could sound good with the right amp and/or pedal. It sounded pretty harsh when I had it in a alder strat w/maple neck with Boss pedals. Red43j , what amp will you be using? The amp will play a big part of getting the tone you want.

The pickup would probably be similar to what Eddie had on his frankenstrat. I remember Ed had something like a Gibson PAF humbucker on "Frankie" and that might be what he put in his unchained guitar. I've never tried a Gibson PAF so i'm not sure if their that good. that's just my opinion.

The Frankenstrat had a ash body , Red43j is going with alder. If it was me I would go with SD Blues Trembucker. I`ve got one in my alder Strat and it sounds great. It`s meant to work with a Floyd and would probably sound killer with the high gain XXX. The only downside is it`s expensive and doesn`t have your standard pole pieces so it looks strange. Check it out,

Check out HighOrder pickups. Great pickups with the best price by far as far as handwound goes. Jeff can wind any spec you wish for 55.00. Waiting list yes, but worth it. Check out Terry Kilgore's track. It is killer.

Jeff is a friend, but I can assure you I would not put em in my guitars if they did not sound as good as they do.
