Default If 5150 Was The Debut Album - Van Halen Would Still Be Huge

Based on the cheese rock that was being released in 1986, I still believe that if 5150 was the debut album from Van Halen with Sammy Hagar, it would still have been a big album at the time, because it was still a better album than what most people in that genre of rock were doing in 1986. That is if you don't happen to think that Poison was brilliant.

Let me clarify though - I am not talking as big as classic VH was, but simply compared to most hair band albums at the time, Van Halen 5150 would have been a hit and we probably would have still seen OU812, FUCK and Balance in some form.

Secondly, Why Can't This Be Love would have been an absolute hit in any capacity. Same with Dreams and I suspect people in guitar circles would be saying something about this Eddie Van Halen dude? Eddie is quite good on some of the songs on 5150 - especially the song 5150.

How do you think this album would have done against other albums of the time with no previous history of the band Van Halen. Let me give you another scenario - what if it was solo artist Sammy Hagar starting a new band and this Van Halen (pretend Van Halen is a word with meaning to it) was it. So coming off my platinum VOA album, this is my new band Van Halen. What would you also say then?

I think 5150 is great album by any scenario or standard for the time.

Van Hagar would've been on the same level as Styx, Journey and Reo Speedwagon are right now. Nothing legendary, nothing memorable, Just playing state fairs and being made fun of on those 80s tribute shows.

    Yeah, or playin RIBFESTS.

Kinda tough question to answer because CVH was one of the main influences for many of the hairbands that were popular in that era. They created the mold: L.A. Strip, Blonde lead singer, screamin guitar player etc etc

Dave would have made it without the VH Bros. You have to imagine he created alot of the attitude that Classic Van Halen was. With videos as humourous as he made in the 80's, he would've tooken the world by storm and Stevie Vai would take Ed's place as an Influncial Guitarist. Because Ed would have never made a song like Eruption with Van Hagar.

I've started this thread once before.
    You kiddin'
Eddie would be washing dishes at Denny's if 5150 was the debut.
Sammy Hagar wouldn't have his steppin' stool of over 10 million albums sold in 1984.
    LOL
And if 5150 was released in the 70's... they would have been booed of the stage at the WHISKEY, STARWOOD etc etc
    What a fucking joke.
The Van Hagar catelogue is worthless.
You can't even hear Eddie's guitar on ou812... it's all washed up in the production.

So Yes, Van Hagar would have been like a POISON or WHITE LION... but those two bands are much better.

Agreed. And Steve Vai taking EVH's place?? Anybody ever hear of Randy fucking Rhoads??? But who's to say that anybody would have made as huge an impact on the genre as Ed.

Edward wrote Eruption when he was a teenager practicing in his bedroom. It had nothing to do with Roth or Hagar's influence.

I don't agree with comparing Van Halen of any era to hair bands- yes they tried to be like them, but it's not the same. I truly believe that Van Halen was and is in its own class, sounding totally unique in regards to its beats, tone, sound in general. Simply put- there is no one to compare them to. And yes, 5150 still would've sounded different compared to other music out at the time.

Dave is in a Van Halen cover band now, just as Axl is in a Guns n' Roses cover band- even though he still calls it that name. Both are pathetic in my opinion.
