    Default oops...lefty

A friend of mine baught her 11 year old one of those fender squire/15watt amp packages. A good starter kit for $250.

She then, after he opens it for xmas, remembers he is left handed..doh

so what are her options? can you really string one backwards? is that a good way for a kid to learn though?

cheapest lefty I can find, that I would recommend for a starter, is over $300 and thats with no amp and all the other goodies.

    any advice?

If she's a complete beginner, she should just learn right handed. I know tons of people who have made it work with no problem, Sisca for one, and my dad another. The band I'm in right now is led by a guy who is left handed but plays right handed. Same for our drummer...

I told her to have him try it righty a while.

then we could re-string it if that doesnt work.

Eventually, if he wants to play lefty, have a new nut put on for lefties and re-align the bridge saddles to correspond with the new nut. That should take care of it enough for the time being.

Re-string/re-nut the guitar as a last resort. Learning to play righty will be much better in the long run.

i don't think i agree with some of you guys....telling someone to do it right handed when they're a lefty is wrong ..imo. ..i coouldn't play shit right handed ,..that's just not how i do it.,i'm all un-coordinated...that way
that's like telling someone who writes with their left to just do it righty...it's not natural..at least not for me..

I wouldn't push her to try and play righty if she is lefty. As a lefty who plays right handed I can tell you that there are some problems she may face down the road if she learns to play right handed. At first she may learn very quickly playing righty because chords and fretting will come very easily. But down when it comes time to develop picking chops, her right hand may have a tough time with the fine motor action required for really fast stuff.

Sure there are a few leftys that play righty that really shred, but I hear from plenty of guys who struggle with the fast picking because of the weak hand on the pick.

So my advice is see how she naturally wants to pick up the instrument and let her play that way. Since this is a beginner guitar anyway I don't see the big deal in restringing it for a lefty.

    Good luck with it.

    Steve

    thanks for all the feedback.

    1. It is HER 11 year old BOY that is learning.

    2. He plays soccer right footed, although he does all hand things left handed, so he may be semi-ambidextrios.

We will start right and if he just isnt getting it, I will re-string it and try that. I hate to frustrate someone that young (thats why I made her get him a half way decent guitar) but I am kinda torn as to what to recommend to them.

I would say to make him start out right, because right handers are easier to teach.

My little brother started out as a lefty, but quit. After a while he started again and he plays righty now because i can teach him easier.
