It say's 1983/1984 on the actual album. Most official sources will say 1984, some magazines have said 1983.

It was released on January 1, 1984 at 12 am. I remember Jump being played a few minutes after midnight -- didn't know it was VH until I heard the guitar solo. The album/cassettes were manufactured in 1983 and since you can't copyright something with a future date, it had to be copyrighted for 1983.

Bart: Who the hell is this?
Jack Bauer: I’m Jack Bauer, who the hell is this?
Bart: Me, er… I’m Ahmed Adudi
Jack: Chloe, get me all you can on Ahmed Adudi… Does anyone there know Ahmed Adudi?
Chloe O’Brien: Ahmed Adudi; wealthy Saudi financier… Disappeared into Afghanistan in the late 90s…
    Jack: … Really?
Chloe (ironically): No Jack it’s a joke name, you’re being set up.

Its weird that I ran across this thread. I was watching/listening to the arena rock channel on TV, and they played "Jump", and they listed the release date as 1983, and later flashed on the screen that "1984" was released on January 9, 1984. 83 or 84, its still my favorite album!!

    Me too, it's my favorite.

The album was recorded in 1983 and, like *Lightning Finger* mentioned, it was released on January 1, 1984 (or very close to that day).

    There you go

I remember that I didn't buy it on New Years Day..., and yes *Jump* was released in December 1983..., as most first VH singles (of an album) were, that is, about three weeks before the albums were released.

That's because the album was copywrited & published in 1983, it looks something like this on the cover: ©1983. The album was in fact released to the public in early January 1984.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth
