Default "I'll Wait" Songwriting Credits question

On the 1984 remaster credits, Michael McDonald of The Doobie Bros. is credited as a co-writer on "I'll Wait." I don't remember him being credited on the original LP or CD.

Did VH lift the melody or something from a Michael McDonald song or perhaps since VH and The Doobies shared a producer - Ted Templeman - maybe Ted asked Michael to contribute in some way, shape or form.

    Just curious, is all...

HOW STRANGE. I was going to post this same question last week but didn't! I noticed the same thing in the 1984 credits a long time ago. Here's another odd piece of info ...the album (1984) liner notes give co-credit to Michael McDonald ... but the Guitar Tabliture book I have doesn't. Might be a typo or mistake in the tab book, however, publishers are normally very careful with that sort of info. If anyone has insight on the song writing credits I would love to know. I've never heard Eddie ever comment on the song or read any interviews with it as a question.

Looks like he probably contributed either lyrics or they used some music he had written somewhere in the song. I'm thinking it is not the guitar solo.

Eddie said in an interview that he recorded "I'll Wait" with just Alex and Donn Landee in the studio. Ted Templeman and Dave wanted it as well as "Jump" to be left off of 1984 because they felt Ed shouldn't concentrate so much on keyboards.
Maybe Dave got the inspiration from the Doobie Brothers for his vocal lines?

"I'll Wait" was a synthesizer-driven song co-written by Van Halen and former Doobie Brother Michael McDonald. Dave and Ted wanted this song kept off the album, but Edward and Donn pushed for it. This song is about the girl wearing men's underwear in a Calvin Klein advertisement. Roth tacked the picture next to his Sony Trinitron TV and wrote the lyrics to her.

LOL! I've been on a steady diet of 1984 the past couple weeks and I was gonna bring this up, too, but never got around to it...

How come VH never did a video for I'll Wait? As the third single (between Panama and Hot For Teacher) and a top 15 hit in the heyday of MTV I can't believe they didn't do a video.

I assumed it was because they were on tour and didn't have time to shoot a proper video. "Panama" was shot mostly on tour. At least they did a proper video for their last single with Dave, "Hot For Teacher."

Dave was asked that question by Martha Quinn on MTV back in 1984. His response was something like, "you know, we could have, but it woulda just looked like a perfume commercial." Don't ask me why I remember that!

This clearly explains why this is 1 of the worst DLR-led VH Tunes of all time.

I remember that they didn't want to string out the album past three singles and videos. They didn't want to pull a Def Leppard and string out an album for three years.

Now we string out albums for 8 years, amazing how things change.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.
