    Default New Orleans

I just spent the most amazing, strenuous, inspiring, empowering, enlightening, exhausting, heartbreaking, terrible, awesome week in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. As soon as I get the pictures developed, I will post them, along with more details about the trip

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

Perhaps you should've driven 80 miles to the east and toured South Mississippi. This is where the REAL "amazing, strenuous, inspiring, empowering, enlightening, exhausting, heartbreaking, terrible" things that resulted from Hurricane Katrina actually occured.

Don't let the media fool you. What New Orleans received was a "squal" in comparison to the destruction of South Mississippi. Those levees over there would have breeched eventually anyway. The entire south knows this and it's time everyone else was informed.

South Mississippi just wants some help. New Orleans wants all their wildest dreams to come true.

I went to Lakeview on NO's Eastside a few months back...you can't imagine the magnitude of destruction unless you see it with your own two eyes. I'm looking forward to seeing your pics janthraxx!!!

FindMyself, I have my family visiting me here in Jax,FL right now...they live in Gulfport. That area was equally as devastated.....

I'm encouraged about the plans I'm seeing for the rebuild along the Coast. There are big plans....here's to the $$$$ coming through to make it happen. My brother is busting his ass 16 hours everyday working as a contractor in MS. He told me he still sees too many people still stuck living in tents....He saw some the other day covered in frost.
From 3-13 to 10-6 and NFC South Champs.....go Saints!

I was talking with some friends the other day, regarding the media's current silence about what's going on in the area...similiar to the silence regarding what is still taking place here in Florida.

People's live's have been destroyed, yet where are the "oh-so-heartwarming" stories about rebirth, ect.?

I understand FindMyself's anger, yet I don't think it should have been directed toward jan.

I agree, Craig! Jan...good for you for going out into the trenches and serving your fellow man in this way! I'd be willing to bet that what you did was a whole hellavu lot more than anyone on this board (besides, Hurricane Halen, that is) has done, as far as going down to the south and offering your time to help in whatever ways you can. What an unselfish thing to do during your Christmas break from school...I'm proud of you!

Let's not forget TopTimi, who as a paramedic/firefighter was there almost immediately, plus with this mess in Florida worked non-stop.

Have you seen the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans? Have you driven around those "streets"? (It's hard to really consider them streets anymore). It doesn't get any worse than that.

Wow JT, you really took it to heart goin down there to help out. Can't wait to see your pics.

BTW - So whattup with the lack of media coverage. The storm's gone, the cameras are gone. But the people and devastation are still there. I don't get it.

I beg to differ. Like I said. Had you driven 80 miles east you would be changing your tune. And yes, I have friends who live here in South Mississippi who have been to New Orleans since the storm and are equally nauseated by the fact that N.O. receives all of the media support and coverage when they have probably only have 10% of the damage experienced here.

A few pics here depicting a little devastation here in South Mississippi. Keep in mind the historic section is completely wiped out...erased. At least New Olreans still has their historic section.

Here's a look at the Town Green in Biloxi, MS:

Here's the bridge I used to take to work that might be driveable again in the summer of 2007:

I'm just seeing red X's. And yes, the French Quarter is fine (surprise surprise), but I've seen pictures of Biloxi, and the Lower Ninth in N.O. is just as bad.

And, on a side note, why are you trying to diminish the hard work people are doing in and around N.O.?

    Casino Row: Biloxi, MS:

This used to be a Cucos Mexican Restaurant, a Hooters Restaurant and a Shell Gas Station:

This is Myrtle Street in Biloxi, MS. Just 48 hours before this picture was taken this street was lined with houses. Where'd they go?

This is the President Casino Barge. Like all the other barges, it broke free, drifted a few miles in the bay, crossed the highway and demolished long standing buildings:

This was another Shell Station in Biloxi MS:

I literally have hundreds of pics of the area showing similar devastation.
