    I m not sure but every time I go to the doctors they tell me I m healthy so I m happy.

    But I run a lot and work out 3 times a week. So that helps.

    Can't remember my ratio but THAT is what you need to keep an eye on. My ratio was in the "below average risk" category. I am 32 with a family history of cholesterol but I'm able to keep it down with good eating habits and LOTS of cardio.

    The other test you want to get if your doctor approves it is the CRP (C-Reactive Protein) test. If you measure high for this then you are at risk due to the high concentration of that particular protein which can lead to heart attacks in the future. You can read more about it here:

    My overall cholesterol was 115, bad cholesterol was 66, but my good cholesterol is only 25 (normal > 45)

    Been taking Zocor hoping to increase it, tried taking Niacin but that having your "face on fire" feeling was enough to keep me away from it

    I was screamin' near 290 when I went for a checkup about 5 years ago. I vowed to lower it without meds but couldn't do it despite eating nothing but oatmeal, fish and fruits and veggies (I lost 20 lbs but I only got my cholesterol down to 200). Lipitor worked but lowered my HDL too much. I had too many side effects with Zocor and Niacin. Vytorin finally got me to acceptable numbers while increasing my HDL from 25 to 50.

    It totally sucked being 28 years old, 5ft 10, 175 lbs and having the doctor's jaw drop on the floor when I got my blood work back. First my dad bails on the family when I was 2 years old and then he gives the cholesterol of The Michelin Man. What a jackass!

    I already know that the garbage I eat and the amount of booze I consume is going to drop kick me into an early grave, so fuck it. Not like I'm gonna leave any kid's fatherless. Life's too short to not enjoy the best life has to offer.

    Good Thread! I know about this shit! ;)

    I'm taking this straight off the sheet of results from my blood work I had done after my hubby had his heart attack.

    Lipid Profile

    My Numbers and then the Reference/Range

    Total Cholesterol= 152 ...... Should be LESS than 200
    Triglicerides = 113 ............ Should be LESS than 150
    VLDL Cholesterol = 23.........5-35 is normal
    (very low density lipids)
    LDL Cholesterol = 91 ..........Should be LESS than 130
    HDL = 38..........................Should be GREATER THAN 40
    Cholesterol/HDL Ratio= 4.0...Should be LESS than 4.4

    So I'm doing good, but my HDL could come up a couple of points...and the only way to raise it is to eat more oatmeal and EXERCISE! Ugh! LOL!

    Bill's levels were only SLIGHTLY high...his total cholesterol was only 212... so you never know.....

    *An important note here... I learned all of this when Bill got sick, and that is that a 'heart attack' doesn't always mean the heart STOPS.
    When the heart STOPS beating it's called "Cardiac Arrest".
    This is more often fatal than what happened to Bill.

    A 'heart attack' like Bill had is called a "Mycardial Infraction" or MI and it is a case where one (or more) of the blood vessels (spaghetti sized arteries) feeding oxygen rich blood to your HEART ITSELF stops flowing and the heart muscle begins to DIE. And if it's not caught in time, Cardiac Arrest and subsiquent death can occur.

    Bill had his heart attack because the arteries feeding blood to his heart muscle were damaged from years of smoking (dialating and consticting from the nicotine...in fact...nicotine does this throughout your ENTIRE circulatory system, not JUST in your heart!) which allowed his arteries to become clogged with plaque (not the kind on your teeth either ..LOL!) but the plaque that forms from eating too much cholesterol. This condition he has developed is called atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and these damaged vessels collect plaque more easily than healthy blood vessels would.

    The GOOD side of the coin is, if you have already fucked your own body up with too many Marlboro Reds and Big Macs, cardio docs say that if you BACK OFF NOW, before you have an MI, you'll probably be able to even REVERSE most of the damage that you've caused to yourself. By NOT smoking, excercising 30 minutes a day at least three times a week, eating less than 200mg of cholesterol a day, increase your soluable fiber intakewith foods like oatmeal and legumes and watch your saturated fat intake, you'll be able to GREATLY decrease your risks.
    If heart disease or atherosclerosis is a thing that runs in your family, well, you could be totally screwed if you keep going to fast food joints and getting triple burgers with extra cheese.
    It's YOUR life. You wanna live? For a long time??? Play by these rules and you can decrease your risks of dying from heart disease.

    Now, cancer, idiot drivers on the freeway and unforseen acts of a higher power, for example, can also shorten your life, sure, but at least if you protect your heart health, your ticker will keep on tickin' the way it oughtta!

    JA <---hope this helps!!! I'm still trying to practice all of this...the smoking is the hardest. I had a setback, started smoking again for a couple weeks, but I have since quit again! This time I hope it'll be FOR GOOD!

    NO drug anywhere can increase your HDL (good) cholesterol.
    The only way to do it is by excercising.

    All of those drugs (statin drugs) are great at lowering your cholesterol because they decrease the amount of cholesterol your liver makes naturally.
    Some docs say if you never ate cholesterol at all, your body would naturally make all you needed. Some docs disagree and say you still need to eat SOME, but not NEARLY as much as people living in our culture consume today!
    Your body needs SOME cholesterol to form healthy connective tissues like your ligaments and cartilige, and any excess is excreeted as waste, IF it doesn't attach itself inside your arteries first.

    Bill had the 'flushing' from the niacin too, but his doctor had him take it RIGHT BEFORE he went to bed and with A NON-ENTERIC COATED, low-dose aspirin. (Chewable orange or cherry 81mg aspirin). He fell asleep and the aspirin kept the 'flushing' feeling down to a minimum....and after a while, his system got used to it.
    They say the longer you can tolerate the niacin the better, because the side effects will lessen over time.
