    Default Camcorders

I'm going to purchase a new camcorder real soon with all these holiday sales going on. I had a really good thread going on this last year but it was lost in the hacking.

Obviously I didn't purchase one but this year I am because the one I currently have has bitten the dust.

Any suggestions or comments would be

What about those that burn DVD's on the spot?

    Firewire?

Any good websites for reviews of camcorders?

Firewire? Good. It's the best way to get the footage into your computer. Don't forget a good video editing program. It's actually a lot of fun to edit video, and you can make home movies watchable.

DVD in the camcorder? Bad. To me, it smacks of big, inflexible, and expensive.

I'd be more worried about finding one with optical image stabilization that you can afford. The digital stabilization blows goats.

Firewire good. DVD burner, not so good.

    You want flexibility.

    OK fair enough.

How do you feel about flash memory, MiniDVs? MiniDV's I understand dominate the market though it's waning alittle to DVD's.

MiniDV would be my choice, but that's because you can pick up a tape anywhere. Go on vacation, shoot more than you planned for.

Not many people would agree with me on this, but I miss the larger VHS-size camcorders. I could get good, steady shots with one of those on my shoulders. My handheld? There's just no way for me to hold it steady for any period of time. My arm gets tired. I've seen a shoulder mount that attaches to the tripod lugs, but the place wanted $100 bucks for for it.

Another thing is hard drive space. DV is 212MB per minute. 8 hours worth of footage basically ate up an 80GB drive when I was putting a project together a couple years ago. Storage is cheap these days, but it's still something to think about.

What most people seem to recommend is importing the video off of tape, burning the finished product to DVD, and keeping the original footage around on the tape, archived for future use. I'm so disorganized that I don't know what I have on many of my tapes. I wish I'd put together a simple catalog back when I started.

This is exactly the way I'm thinking and why I'm leaning towards MiniDV though I haven't totally made up my mind.

With my current camcorder I have saved all the originals while making VCR tapes out of them.

With the new camcorder I'll burn them to DVD from the computer.

At least that's the way I'm leaning right now.

Yeah, if you've got a DVD burner I really don't know what advantages a DVD camcorder would offer. There's the draw of immediate playback, but if you've got the camera you can do that anyway.

I'm completely satisfied with the Panasonic I got last summer. I bought off of ebay and got a 3CCD for the price of a new Sony 1CCD, and according to the write ups, the Pany is better.

I have been very pleased with the Mini-Dv JVC Digital Video Recorder I purchased about two years ago. It does the job great. I do like Mike suggested. I keep a hard copy of everything on tape, and then use a firewire to send to the PC, edit, and burn a DVD.

Agreed!! I strictly use a full-size VHS when taping youth hockey games for my league... It's very important not to make people want to throw up from motion sickness... <LOL> Besides I use commerical Panasonic VHS editing decks and the public access stations only use SVHS too...

So, with that all said... Should I go Mini-DV?? <LOL>
