    Default parent's worst nightmare, twice

Brothers die in traffic crashes minutes apart

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (AP) -- Sheriff's deputy Andy McDowell was forced to live a parent's worst nightmare twice in a matter of minutes.

After he was taken to the site where one of his two sons was killed in a car crash early Wednesday, McDowell was driven past another fatal accident. Only later did he learn that the fiery wreck took the life of his only other child.

"You take the most unimaginable hell that a parent could be told and double that," Warren County Deputy Coroner Dwayne Lawrence said.

Rory McDowell, 23, and Cory McDowell, 21, both died within a couple of miles from the home they shared with their father in southern Kentucky's rural Warren County.

Rory McDowell lost control of his pickup truck coming out of a curve and the vehicle struck a tree shortly before 1:30 a.m., authorities said. There was no visible sign of alcohol involved, sheriff's Capt. Brent Brown said Thursday.

The father told authorities he had been talking with Rory McDowell on a cell phone about the time of the crash, Brown said. He said that might have been a factor in the crash, as well as excessive speed on a narrow road. He had no further details.

About 15 minutes after the first crash, Cory McDowell's 1984 Porsche veered off another rural road, went into a spin, struck a tree and burst into flames, authorities said.

The crashes remained under investigation, police said.

Authorities said the father had always doted on his sons. "That's all he talked about was his boys," said sheriff's department Sgt. Tim Meyer. "He lived for his boys."

I saw this earlier today. I couldn't bring myself to post it. Those with kids know how badly this would hurt. I couldn't go on. Really, what would be left to live for. I just couldn't do it.

With a 10yo and 6yo myself - I couldn't imagine having to be in that situation... It was 1982, I was a Freshman in HS, and the State Police came to the house, they asked about my uncle... When he left, my other uncle and I took off to the store... Two miles down the street, there they were, the police cars, the tow-truck and the ambulance... As we slowly drove by the scene, we recognized the overturned car being pulled out of the river... Off to the side near the edge of the road was the white sheet, with my uncle's boots protruding... He was only 24... That's as close as I can relate and would ever want to...

I agree. Suicide would be foremost in my mind. Too chicken to do it, but I'd sure be thinking it. Unimaginable.

    Sllllloooooooowwwwww Dooooooowwwwnn.

Seriously, the idea is to get home.

For all the hype drunk drivers get, speeding in a motor vehicle is the leading killer of Americans. While 2150 have died in Iraq, 120,000 have died on the roads, streets and highways of the United States.

Last year I lost a friend when she lost control of he car, she also wasn't wearing her seatbelt.

It's Christmas, slow down so you don't fuck it up.

Ditto. I get emotional over the loss of others losing their children. I really don't think I could go on especially losing both of them.

That man needs some prayers and some serious support. I pray to God that He helps him figure out some way of living his life..such a tragedy, i dont think i could or would want to go on myself, it hurts just reading it about this poor man and his boys..

..that's why TODAY is the most important day to be with ur kids and to tell them what they mean to you and how wonderful they are..and that's for everyday

Losing a child, let alone two like this, is something you just cannot get over. The pain will ease with time, but it will never go away. My heart goes out to this guy. What a terrible thing to deal with.
