    Default What a Tone!

This is far and away the closest I have ever heard to getting a Eddie tone, not to mention one of the best I have ever found on the net, he is playing his 5150 combo through a Marshall 4x12 and he mic'd the Marshall not the 5150. I challenge anyone to find a closer tone to Ed's that isn't actually his. Click on the link below then click on the 5150 combo with Marshall cab link.

Yeah, ive seen that guy on here a few times and his tone is DAM close to eddies. Especially with that 5150 Combo and the Marshall cab! I give major props to this guy cuz his sound and tone is almost as good as eddies.

Pretty good. It's still missing a certain "fullness" in the sound to my ear though...Does anyone have the 6505 combo? Does it sound pretty much identical to the 5150?

The tracks he did with the Marshall 1970 100watt sound alot better to me

Maybe he could help the drummer out with his tone on the "Hot 4 Teacher" cover because it sounds worse than Lars' St. Anger mix....

Hehe, well that is very true, and heavy as fuck too. I sometimes miss it though. I had some great tones coming out of that baby. The 5150 II has been a bit of a challenge for me ever since I got it.

I had a 5150 II for a few years then sold it. I was one of the first guys to get one back in '99. Lead channel was blown right out of the box. Blew a power tube a month later... I love Peavey stuff, but had way too many problems with that thing. The clean channel sounded great, but I could never get enough volume to match my lead channel. I think I just got a bad unit.

I've just got a Line 6 Spider II head to hold me over until I find something I'm happy with. I'm thinking of the 6505 combo.... But I've been playing alot of bass lately...Ashdown bass amps are the shit.....

I owned a 5150 for 3 years and i sold it 2 weeks ago. I just bought a Randall RM50B with "Tweed" and "SL+" modules. Believe me or not, it sounds WAY BETTER than the 5150 for the "brown sound". With my MXR Phase90 modified, my MXR Flanger and My Frankie, it sounds nearly like Ed's in 78.

What you need to remember is that VHaholic is doing some really goofy sh*t with his settings, too. Frankly, he uses settings and pickups that many players aren't ready to cope with.

Regarding his Vito Bratta impersonation, which I love, it's here:

What I like about the clip is that it represents the incredible tone, yet clarity you can get with a low-output pickup. His clip, along with some nudging along from an employee at Guitar Center, has got me convinced to go low-output.

I'm trying to decide between an overwound PAF (Virtual Hot Vintage, Duncan '78, or Hybrid, etc.) or a P-90 impersonation (Duncan Phat Cats).

The Phat Cats, on paper, seem to be almost *identical* to an early-middle Eddie tone. Wound heavier than a PAF, but way more open than a high-output pickup.

My biggest misconception about low-output pickups was that they'd have sh*t sustain, and wimpy attack. On the contrary, they're basically the "outline" of a high-output pickup. The empty space in the middle is filled-up by your amplifier's glorious tubes. The biggest decision, IMO, is which magnet to go with.

Not that YOU brought up the pickup thing....that was me. I thought I'd mention his clip's influence, anyway....
