Then they would have to call it Best of All 3 worlds and that doesn't really fit.

In one of the interviews with Alex during last year's tour, he said that they consider everything they do as Van Halen, but 3 didn't really fit with anything they've ever done, so they left it off...but he was firm that the album can stand alone. Whatever that meant. I have no link, unless you can figure out how to link my brain.

I think what Alex was really saying was, "If we released an album, and nobody liked it, did it really ever exist?"

I think A Year to the Day, Without You, Fire In The Hole, and Josephina all would have been reasonable inclusions............rather hear any of these instead of "Pretty Woman"

None of the three new songs from Best Of Vol. 1 were on Best Of Both Worlds as well. As well as Atomic Punk, Ice Cream Man, Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Light Up The Sky, Take Your Whiskey Home, Mean Streets, So This Is Love, Intruder, Drop Dead Legs, 5150, Cabo Wabo, Pleasure Dome, In N' Out, Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do) and Amsterdam and any others I missed. There could've been a third disc for it for all three lead singers honestly.

If Eddie was so proud of his work with 3, then why no songs on BOBW?
I really don't care, best of's suck IMO. But if it is a debatable topic, WHY? If Eddie and Alex are "in charge" then why not any 3?
    Just go for it!

Because it would be called "The Best Of All Worlds", which sounds like an NBC sitcom from the eighties.

    Or more fittingly, a "soap-opera".

I don't think "The Best Of Both Worlds" lost anything by not including anything off "Van Halen III", however 'Not Enough' & 'Can't Stop Lovin You' are not the best tracks to represent "Balance".

IMHO tracks like 'The Seventh Seal', 'Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)' & 'Feelin' would have been stronger tracks...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

My guess that it was studio's decision not to include songs from III on BOBW, not Eddie or Alex.

Firstly, I think it's safe to say that Ed would never have alone decided to release another Best Of compilation anyway. That obviously sounds like studio pressure to test the waters of doing 3 or so new songs released with a popular package of previous hits as opposed to going back into the studio doing a full new album, considering how in doubt Sam's return may last for and whether the chemistry is still there. Maybe they didn't want a repeat of 1996 and the poor album sales III received.

Secondly, I think it's also safe to say that Ed or Al didn't have any hand in choosing the list of songs that appeared on the package. The cover songs from Diver Down got featured and we all know their stance on them. The studio would've felt compelled to include 'Pretty Woman' and 'Dancing In The Streets' since they did hit the singles chart at some point.
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

One flaw in that: according to the "Official" site, the Compilation Producer is listed as Van Halen. That would more than likely mean "current" (at that time) VH, and would go a long way toward explaining why there are no pictures of Dave Roth to be found, and also why we get 3 crummy live versions of Roth era tunes sung by Sam Hagar.
