Default Teen With Peanut Allergy Dies After Kiss

SAGUENAY, Quebec - A 15-year-old girl with a peanut allergy died after kissing her boyfriend, who had just eaten a peanut butter snack, hospital officials said Monday.

Christina Desforges died in a Quebec hospital Wednesday after doctors were unable to treat her allergic reaction to the kiss the previous weekend.

Desforges, who lived in Saguenay, about 155 miles north of Quebec City, was almost immediately given a shot of adrenaline, a standard tool for treating the anaphylactic shock brought on by a peanut allergy, officials said.

An autopsy was being performed. Dr. Nina Verreault, an allergist at the Chicoutimi Hospital in Saguenay, declined to comment on the case.

The symptoms of peanut allergy can include hives, plunging blood pressure and swelling of the face and throat, which can block breathing.

Peanut allergies have been rising in recent decades. The reason remains unclear but one study found that baby creams or lotions with peanut oil may cause children to develop allergies later in life.

About 1.5 million Americans are severely allergic to even the smallest trace of peanuts and peanut allergies account for 50 to 100 deaths in the United States each year. Canadian figures were not immediately available.

My son had someone in his class like that, they couldn't have anything with peanut products in the room - just the smell would be enough to put the kid into shock.

It's almost common now, and I can't remember ANYONE with a peanut allergy when I was growing up. Strange shit, man.

    Sadly I can relate.
I grew up with a ton of allergies. (Peanuts, eggs, dairy, shellfish etc...)
Dinner out, or in for that matter, was never a treat for my family or friends.
Had some close calls, but never anything that extreme. The Epi-pen / shots came in handy a few times as a child.
As I have aged, I am sure I have outgrown some of the food allergies. But there is no way I would chance it. I figure if I have never had it, I probably won't miss it.
My heart goes out to the kid and the families.

    No PB&J is borderline un-American.

    Totally understandable though.

I had 2 children in my class with severe anaphylaxis to all tree nuts. Neither child could get any type of peanut product on their hands or they'd go into shock. One of them had gone into anaphylaxic shock 6 times already in his life. I had to carry his Epi-pen with me EVERYWHERE (to the playground, Spanish class, motor class, music, science) because of this exact type scenario. You never know what child from another class has touched something with some type of peanut residue on their hands. Unfortunately, we could not force our parents to not send peanut butter b/c we are not a peanut-free school. I had one parent who refused b/c "her child would not eat meat and that's the only way she'll get her protein." So...everyday she had peanut butter for lunch, she'd sit at a different table and I'd have to walk her to the bathroom afterwards to turn on the sink for her to wash her hands. Then, I'd have to bleach the table, underneath the table, the floor, and the chair where she was sitting. It was such a pain in the ass for those parents not to honor the parent's request for them to not bring peanut butter. That was the scariest year. This child's allergy was so severe that his throat closed completely within 2 minutes of being exposed. If he went into shock, it was the Epi-pen every 15 min. and Benadryl until under the care of a hospital doctor.

AND GET THIS...most ambulances will not carry Epi-pens for children!!! That's what we were told by the E.M.S. that picked up another child from our school this fall who went into anaphylaxic shock from peanuts. It's very scary, indeed.

Some people would also be amazed at just how many products contain some form of peanuts (either oil, flour, or traces of nuts). Did you know Chex Mix contains peanut flour b/c either the corn or rice Chex are made with peanut flour (at least it was 7 years ago...they may have changed the ingredients since then).

I agree with you. This parent was also a doctor! I tried to make them understand the seriousness of the other child's allergy. I also said to them, "If (Jane) had a severe disability, wouldn't you want the other children, parents, and myself to offer your child the safest possible environment so that your child would have the same learning opportunities as the other children?" And, STILL they wouldn't honor the request!

This is exactly the problem - the traces, the residues, and the airborne dust that can affect a child with food allergies. Most people are willing to help control food allergies, but they don't realize how such a tiny an amount can shut down an airway in less than a minute. My son has the severe life threatening tree nut allergy, too. He wears a medicalert bracelet and the school has been factastic about taken huge precautions against reaction. They keep his Epi-pen Jr and have a full plan of action. They know not to let him eat anything that does not come from home, and they have a no-nut table in the lunch room where the kids are supervised so they do not share food. My worst fear is a kid will play a prank on him and he'll die from it. I've already warned him about kissing girls who may have eaten tree nuts - even though he's only 8! He was quite embarassed and said, "Mom!!!" LOL.

Pillsbury makes Ready to Bake sugar cookies with Walnut Flour. How freakin' scary is that? Who would think a sugar cookie would be a problem? Food allergies suck.

And I'm sorry, but if that doctor/parent still refused to listen to reason, they deserve a swift kick in the ass. How ignorant, selfish, and careless can a medical doctor be to not see the risk? What an ass.

Less people in America will die of SARS and West Nile compared to peanuts and milk...where is the uproar and awareness? Sad, but true.
    Just go for it!
