    Default Help with effects, please

    Hello,
I've used effects racks for long enough and am displeased with how it takes away so much of my amp's raw tone. So, I'm going to stomp boxes in an attempt to alleviate the situation. My Amp head is a 5150 II and the cabinets are Mesa Boogie Recto Cabs (brutal combination, BTW). The effects will be as follows:

    1) Boss DD-20 Giga Delay
    2) Boss CE-20 Chorus Twin Pedal
    3) MXR EVH Phase 90
    4) Boss BF-3 Flanger (will replace with MXR Flanger)
    5) Dunlop 535Q Wah
These will all be powered by an MXR DC Brick.

I understand that, with the exception of the wah pedal, these are all "time-based" effects, and are traditionally inserted into the effects loop. I was hoping someone could either confirm this for me, or if you have any recommendations as to what should go where as well as the best order for all these things to be in. Thank you.

Well I basically have the same pedals as you do, minus the chorus.

Here's how mine is set up, I also have a 5150 and a Marshall cab.

DEFINITELY put the Delay in the Effects Loop, you will get a much truer sound with it in the loop and not out in front. I have my Boss DD-3 in the loop with a BBE Sonic Maximizer, the sound is great and I'm basically using the delay as a reverb.

After my guitar, I have the Wah, then the EVH MXR Phase 90, and last Boss flanger (BF-2). I would put the chorus either after the Phase 90 or after the flanger, experiment there to see what sounds best.

I actually have an overdrive pedal I use for solos, but that's obviously not something you use, but I have the overdrive first before the wah.

With all those pedals, dm, I'd just try multiple combos...You're as likely to stumble onto something good as anyone...

That's pretty interesting, I'll try that out myself. I have my Phase 90 and Flange in the loop with my reverb, delay and sonic maximizer. I think I tried the Phase on the floor and didn't like it. Sounded too overpowering, but I'll try it again and see. I recently got a Boss chorus pedal and still haven't found a place where I love it yet.

And I also have an overdrive pedal. The DOD Wengie pedal. There's no light on the fucker so ya gotta use your ear to know when it's on.

I've had my Phase 90 in the loop before, but I use it a lot for accenting so sometimes I think it's almost a bit too hidden. Again for me I'm fighting another guitar player in a live mix, so I have to do these things to stand out.

I use the MXR phase 90 in front of my 5150, with my delay and EQ in the loop. With the MXR in front, I can get that Atomic Punk swishing thing dead on. I too found the MXR overpowering until I did the r28 mod to it. It's a completely different pedal now, in a good way. It sounds terrific in front of the amp now. One thing I notice about my 5150 is that is responds very well to EQ. From your list of effects there, I would try the phase 90, flanger and wah in front of the amp, with everything else in the loop. Good luck!

Yeah the EVH MXR Phase 90 has the vintage "Script" logo sound, which is what the R28 mod does to the "Block" logo Phase 90's.

Just wanted to say dude, I'm gonna give that Boss DD3 pedal a try. I've been reading up on it, and it's a bit cheaper than the DD6. I've got an Ibanez analog delay pedal, and although it's cool, it's kinda lacking in what I really want to do with my delays. I also want to scrap my Digiverb because it sucks the shit out of my tone. It's almost depressing sometimes, so hopefully the DD3 is what I've been looking for in my sound.

I have trimmed back to just the Phase 90 and my MXR Flanger. I don't even use a boost anymore. I use either a Peacemaker or a Soldano.
