    Default What Acoustic

Thinking about getting a new axe, something that plays well and is good
for recording. How achievable is this for around $600? Whadaya play,
    whadaya like?

I bought mine brand new from a local shop. Some are more expensive, yes, but cheaper ones can be found.

Yep, they DO have 'cheaper' models available now. Supposedly they use the same construction process as the more expensice ones but use cheaper materials. The ones I've tried out are still STELLAR guitars...

I have an acoustic-electric Ibenez that cost around $450 and plays very nice and sounds really good and looks kick-ass. It's a Black/blue flame and is made with quality construction. It's action is a little higher than I'd like, but then again what new guitar has really low action right out of the box without paying big bucks. Even the Martins I played had comparable action.

Anything that's made in the states are typically going to run you over $1000. The most affordable Martin I could find anywhere was $1800.00 and it looked like a country western acoustic.

As was mentioned earlier, you can't go wrong with the lower end Martin's...the do sound sweet. For my money/ears, Takamine also makes a really nice acoustic for the dough, lotta' bang for the buck there, and I'm talking I've played Taks with a pricetag of $300 that IMHO sounded sweet. Also can't go wrong with Taylors, but I believe the cheapest models are $800.

I currently own an Ovation CS-257 and love it.
It's great for both live and recording.

However, the best sounding and best playing "acoustic" I've ever owned was a Gibson Chet Akins model. It's not in the $600 range though.

    Hands down-
Washburn. I dunno if anyone from this board as of late has been watching the quality of this company, but my god, for an import, it definately can be put into the "Martin Killer" catergory. Nothing personal to you Martin lovers, but I was skeptical. Checked out one D56SW, and it was KILLER! Its now mine.
Washburn is making GREAT import stuff that is in the range of "American" quality (even though I'm STILL a firm believer that, sadly, American quality has been lacking in some products as of late and the imported stuff is getting better. Such a shame). I was told by someone that is TIGHT with Washburn that the owner of the company is sending Luthiers over to foreign factories, and they are teaching them what we want. Its showing in Washburns product. Don't believe me? Check out www.boogiestreet.com and see what Eric McKenna has been getting in the way of imports. -Red43j

I own an Ovation and it just isn't cutting it. It plays OK, but doesn't record
well. Thanks for the input everyone.

I bought my Taylor for around 530 over a year ago. Sounds nicer than the Martin in my opinion, and looks better too. I got it at Guitar Center. It's the 110 model. Lowest model you can get, but for me it gets the job done.

The Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets whatever you want to call them, have NEVER displayed "SOX" anywhere on their caps, jerseys, or merchandise, therefore they shouldn't be referred to as such. However, the White Sox have used "SOX" since 1912.

The SOX are in Chicago...we just allow the Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets to use the name.

I have never played one, but a guy I know swears that Seaguls are the best for your buck.
