    Default Gene Simmons Demo

I was jsut listening to the Gene Simmons Demo that I downloaded from Guitars101. I never heard it in it's entirety before. Just wonderin' if any of you think like I do that if that demo was released as VH's first album, they would have been nothing. Either Templeman was a genius for capturing their fire or Simmons an idoit for trying to record Van Halen like Kiss recorded. Thoughts?

I have no idea what other bands demo tapes sound like but I always thought that they were something to give a flavor of a band not be the actual release. I doubt many bands starting out can afford the best equipment around to do a demo. Alot of what is on that demo was reworked a bit but mostly it was just better quality when recorded for the record, not a totally different sound/feel.

I kind of disagree. Don't you think that regardless of sound that Eddie's playing sounded like he had a governor on him. That Demo sounded nothing like the playing that was going on at their live shows during that time. I was refering more to the performances more than the sound of the recording. But regarding the sound, Simmons took them to NY to recorded it. I'm sure they had all the best equipment at their disposal.

The one song that I truly love from the Gene Simmons Demo is Woman In Love. The tune has a great groove to it and the background vocals are awesome.

I believe that most of the equipment that VH used for ZERO was KISS gear...hence this is why this demo has KISS tone.

All demos need to be polished considerably and, yes, Ted captured the VH essence and did what a seasoned pro would do - make it even better. Mixing is everything when it comes to crafting a song and making it sound larger than life. Just compare those on the demo to the first album.

Producing an album truely is a collaborative process between the talents of the band and the producer. If Gene or Ted were not involved, someone else would have polished raw VH sound into the magic we all know

Don't forget the engineer. Every release Donn Landee engineered rocked. Another of Ed's soul mates, best friends, best guy in the world who fell by the wayside.

demo's are generally all about the songs...a good song recorded good or bad is still a good song....most record company's can see through a shitty recording and hear a songs potential commercially. when we recorded our bands first demo's our motto was "KISS-(Keep It Simple Stupid)". Maybe Gene thought Warner may be scared off by Ed's blazing guitar??...not comercial enough??...dunno..just a thought

I think Fretburner has a great point. I still think it still would have been a helluva album but Ted turned those tunes into masterpieces. Runnin' With the Devil on the demo sounds like a groove on the demo and a bombastic tour de force on the album. Love the demo version part where Dave yells "Get Some!" before Eddie's solos.

It's a stiff recording obviously because of the constraints on Ed's playing. And Dave sounds like shit for the most part too. But still a very cool part VH history.

And a demo is just that...a demo.

Still not sure why Light In The Sky never made it on a Van Halen album. What a great fucking solo by Ed. Unreal.

I will agree that woman in love sound awsome! I know that Eddie playing is kind of flat on this, but I love that song. Gone for good! So Long! Bye Bye!

Light In The Sky is a killer tune and Ed's solo, as always, is nails. Good call!

Yes but that's not on the Gene Simmons Demo, that's the WB Demo. And yes that is a cool tune.
