    Default Billy Joel

A couple of news items on Billy Joel (no trees were hurt during the gathering of these reports):

both from www.billboard.com - first one I missed when it was posted in early October, but still noteworthy:

Unreleased Tracks Span Joel's 'My Lives'

    October 11, 2005, 4:50 PM ET

    Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
A host of unreleased tracks and rarities will be found on the upcoming Billy Joel boxed set "My Lives," due Dec. 6 via Columbia/Legacy. Joel personally selected the material for the five-disc collection, which features 23 never-before-heard songs as well as a previously unreleased live DVD shot in Frankfurt during the River of Dreams tour.

The set begins with rare cuts from Joel's mid-1960s bands the Lost Souls and the Hassles and moves into material recorded by his hard rock act Attila, which released its only album in 1970. Disc one also features demos of "Only a Man," "Oyster Bay" and "Piano Man," plus early versions of "New Mexico" (which became "Worse Comes to Worst") and "These Rhinestone Days" (which became "I Loved These Days").

The second disc sports early versions of "For the Longest Time" and "Elvis Presley Blvd.," a live take on "Captain Jack" from a July 1981 show at Sparks Saloon in Huntington, Long Island, an alternate version of "Getting Closer" with Steve Winwood and a live cover of Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are a Changin'" recorded in 1987 on a Russian TV show.

Disc three is dominated by live and studio covers of such tracks as the Isley Brothers' "Shout," Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up" and "Heartbreak Hotel," the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night," Leonard Cohen's "Light as the Breeze" and the Carole King/Gerry Goffin oldie "Hey Girl."

The final audio disc features a 1994 live duet with Elton John on "You May Be Right," audio clips of recordings first issued on Joel's "Essential Video Collection" and a series of his recent classical compositions.

The live DVD rounds up 14 selections from throughout Joel's career, including "Pressure," "Allentown," "We Didn't Start the Fire," "Big Shot" and "Goodnight Saigon."

Fans can also utilize Umixit technology encoded onto the disc to make their own remixes of Joel's "Zanzibar" and a live version of "I Go to Extremes."

Here is the track list for "My Lives":

    Disc 1:
"My Journey's End" (the Lost Souls)

Default Billy Joel Returning To The Road

    Ray Waddell, Nashville

Billy Joel will return to the road as a solo headlining artist for the first time in nearly eight years, sources tell Billboard.com, beginning with a series of shows in January through April of next year.

Dates on the tour, which includes stops in such markets as Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Fla., and New York, will begin being announced as soon as Friday (Nov. 11). Ticket prices will top out at $75 in most markets.

The last time Joel toured solo was 1998-99, when he grossed $47 million from 64 shows that drew 1.1 million people, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Since then, Joel's tours with fellow piano pop superstar Elton John have made them the most lucrative co-headlining duo of all time. John and Joel last toured together in 2003, grossing $46 million from just 24 dates.

As previously reported, Joel handpicked the selections on the upcoming Columbia/Legacy boxed set "My Lives," which has been moved forward to Nov. 22 from its originally announced Dec. 6 release date.

It's a shame there is only one track from Atilla...the record was so awful that it is classic.

Hmmm...a keyboard player and a drummer, how "White Stripes"-like.

Both had long hair on the cover. They were trying to copy Lee Micheals, who had a hit with "Do You Know What I Mean"...he used the same set-up.

It's neat to see so much rare and unreleased stuff, like the live cover of the Beatles' "I'll Cry Instead". When you hear it, you'll swear that it's John Lennon singing!

Thanks for the heads-up...looks like this and Springsteen for Christmas.

I saw Billy Joel on the Storm Front Tour, excellent show. I'd highly recommend seeing him. He is a great songwriter, musician and showman (gives 200%). During Matter of Trust he was playing guitar (never seen that before), then he broke into some Zeppelin (I want to say it was Whole Lotta Love, but can't remember) The crowd went nuts.

I really hope he can get straightened out...

The same night as that show I recall, while Billy was rockin the Capital Centre in Landover Maryland, Candlestick Park in San Fran was getting rocked by an earthquake during the World Series!

The one and only time I say Billy Joel was on the Storm Front tour in Hartford, CT. It was really a great show. He's got so many good songs to sing along to.

One of my favorite albums is Songs From the Attic.

Songs From the Attic is awsome!

I have seen the Piano Man multiple times (in New Haven and Hartford). The New Haven show was for The Bridge, and my buddy went to one show with our group of friends and with his {now} wife for a second show and Billy was giving scores for the 86 World Series during his set, how cool!

One of the best shows was during his "farewell" tour. You could go to his website and vote for a deep track you would like to hear in your city. And during the show he would give the audience three tunes to choose from, and he'd play one. I think he did it two or three times. He has got such a deep catalog.

Billy and Van Halen - the sound track of my life (although it has been a little quiet the past decade).

thanks I never thought of that. So I checked amazon canada, me being in canada and all, and holy fucking shit $82.99 (insert best Homer Simpson scream here) I suppose there IS a whole lot of stuff on there. It'll probably be a lot cheaper at Future Shop (not listed yet)

I could have had free tickets to a Billy Joel show back when I lived in Vegas. The neighbor across the street from me had won them, wasn't able to go, and was going to give them to me. I wasn't home though, so I didn't even know about it until the next day. They just found someone else to give them to.

I love Billy Joel...In fact I've got 52nd Street playing right now. I'll probably get the box set eventually. The length of time that would be depenmds on the price. And I sure hope he comes here to houston (which is a relatively neglected area for touring, especially for it being the 4th biggest city in the country) on his tour cause I would be there in a second.
