Van Halen woke me from a coma Pt. 2

As some of you might remember, a couple of months ago I posted how I had awoken from a coma after a friend of mine brought "1984" into my hospital room and started playing it. After I had posted about that, some of you asked if I could post the article about me that was in my local paper. Well, for those of you that are interested here is the aticle as it appeared in the Grand Rapids Press on July 10th of this year. Sorry its just me typing and not the real article, but there's a fee to get a link to it at the press' web site. Thanks to all of you that responded when I first posted this a while back and here is the article:

GRAND RAPIDS- Four weeks ago this morning, as Brooks Hollemans lingered in a coma from which he was not expected to awaken, his wife was making plans to donate his organs. His father was searching funeral homes. Van Halen's "Jump" played softly in his hospital room, though no one seemed to be listening.

    One person was.

Derek Hollemans noticed it first--his brother, slightly air-tapping the beat with his foot. Brooks went to four Van Halen concerts last summer.

He loves the band, almost as much as the Detroit Tigers, and as that day progressed, those two unrelated entities would help provide something that his family desperately craved: Hope.

The music stirred something in Brooks. So did baseball.

A nurse, observing the Tigers paraphenalia in his room, nonchalantly asked if he was a fan. How many times the same question was posed during Brooks' 19 days in a coma, no one knows.

Except that day, Brooks nodded. His foggy improvement continued that day, until he finally spoke. His wife, father, mother in law and doctor were present. All listened intently, and all were taken aback----not just by Brooks speaking, but by what he said.

"We all looked at each other, stunned." Dr. Stephen Bloom said. We were thinking, "This is the question he's asking?" Most people, when they wake up from a coma, ask "What's my name", or "Where am I?"

After two brain surgeries and almost three weeks in a coma at that glazed-over crossroads of his life, Brooks Hollemans asked: "Can I still go to the all-star game?".

Well, thanks to all of you linkers that read this and were/are interested! There is more to the article, but it just really explains that I'm going through therapy to recover. Well, I'm almost back to 100% but not quite. I still get fatigued after doing hardly anything at all, and I had some nasty tissue damage in my knees that makes them hard to bend 100%, but the good news is that everything related to my brain and memory seem to be OK. In the accident I was in, I was patching potholes on an expressway for the county that I work for, and the lyrics to Runnin' With the Devil kind of hit home. "I found the simple life, ain't so simple, when I jumped out on that road"

Thanks again to all of you for reading, and just so you know I didn't type the entire article but the part about Van Halen is of course included and was at the beginning of the article.

    -Brooks (Interceptor)

Loves the band almost as much as the Detroit Tigers? Well, we'll have to work on getting your priorities back in order... Good read, glad to hear you're recovering nicely!

...that's not "gay" at all. Maybe hearing this story would be the reminder Ed needs to understand how important his music is to so many people and that he really does have a purpose in this world. I know that I've been really touched after someone totally unexpected (even people I hardly knew) told me that I had impacted their life in a positive way. It always makes me feel as if I am fulfilling my purpose here on earth. Hearing about a total stranger's awakening from a coma b/c of HIS music would probably (or maybe I should say hopefully) impact Ed GREATLY.

Thank you for sharing your story and best wishes for a complete recovery!

Wow man!! I just checked out the story of HOW you went into a coma. I work for the DA's office in my hometown and a lot of times these things don't turn out with the victim waking up. Glad to hear you made it through...and keep on rocking!!!

    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
