    Default Eddie Playing Slide

I read in "Van Halen 101" that WACF was the FIRST time eddie ever played slide. I'm not sure where Abel got this info and not trying to "dis" him. I just thought that the "Great and Creative Edward Van Halen" would have toyed with everything from Beer bottles to slide long before then. I mean c'mon, this is guy who used a blow dryer and freakin drill on his guitar.

Just thought someone here may have something on Ed playing slide before this time period...

Nah I think he's right. Gotta figure, Ed didn't really mess around with acoustic guitars either, but he was able to pick up one and come up with Spanish Fly. We like to think that Ed pretty much dicked around with everything, but I don't think that's the case.

I love his slide stuff on WACF, but it's cooler on Dirty Movies. That's the shit.

He probably did mess around with a slide early on...but they had SO much material to work with that maybe the producer did'nt want it on the records just yet...

Eruption was never planned for the first album..Eddie was just jamming in the studio one day and Ted T. heard it and wanted it on the record.

Here's an excerpt fron a Guitar Player Magazine interview from January 1980, Ed was 23:

"Van Halen came off the road in December 1979 and almost immediatly went into the studio to record their third LP, Women And Children First, in only eight days. Once again Eddie proved that his playing is not limited to rock styles. On 'Could This Be Magic' he performed an impromptu Hawaiian sounding acoustic slide part, and also played the steel-string on 'Take Your Whiskey Home'."

As well as on Take Me Back too. Always thought that guitar solo was pretty tasty over those chords. Too bad he never really tried to duplicate it live on that song.

Yeah if true, that is awesome. Thinking about it, maybe he didn't get into the slide thing earlier because the slide is somewhat "limiting" in the sense that you basically are using one finger... Ed?...1 Finger?

I never really got into play slide guitar. When I was gigging I did a few simple tunes on slide (well Bic lighter). I mean I like the sound and respect those that do it well. It just "Rattles" to much and I guess I didn't have the patience to perfect it. One of my buds has one guitar with the action set as shitty as Dave's "cheapo Ice Cream" Axe (Strings way off the frets ) just for his slide stuff..

Anyone a real "SLIDE" man here?...

I know I'm not. I bought one last year and it just wasn't my thing. Watching Eric Sardinas play slide guitar was the main reason why I went out and got mine. It was cool to mess around with, but I could never apply it to anything I do at the moment.
