    Default DVD recorder/burner question

Ok first i want to know what the hell a "standalone" recorder is. Is this a standalone recorder?

Ok, the pic above is the kind of dvd recorder that i have. I want to record a store bought dvd (one without the protected macrovision crap) and the dvd im trying to record has a concert, and some extras like a photo gallery, dicography and a few unplugged songs. When i record though, the extras wont record. Is there anyway to record the dvd the way it was made so that i can go to the menu button and all the extra stuff will be there or can you not do that on these kind of recorders?

You may have to go with a dual layer DVD to do that but you would have to see if your burner supports it.

Ya mon. You pretty much need a ripping program for your computer I think to get the menu and extras.

I got a sony dvd/vcr combo/burner a while back with another POS dvd player to plug the s video in to for recording purposes. It plays every format so I can watch and record ...ahem...borrowed (ripped) movies from a buddy of mine that's on dvdr discs, but your just recording what's playing, not what's built in as chapters and menu extras....unless I'm doing it all wrong. Could be!

Yes, You definitely need a computer to make the kind of copy you are talking about.

You don't necessarily need a dual layer burner though. All you need is a program to rip it and a program to recompress it to fit on a single layer dvdr.

It's a 3 step process on your computer.

    Rip It
    Compress It
    Burn It

to answer your first question YES that is a stand alone burner. I.E. it is not integrated with a computer.

A computer, most likely. Stand alone DVD recorders are a waste of my, in my opinion. They're a throw back to the VCR in a time with DVRs and digital video makes so many more things possible.

a good computer, LOTS of hard drive space, a video capture card, a dvd burner and software for bruning and making chapters.

I have got this far, my next atempt is to video tape my old super 8 movies right from the screen and then try to get those to DVD

The easiest way to get VHS into a computer in an editable format is just to run it through a digital camcorder. It's still a pain, but the time involved is the worst part of it.

I keep thinking about my old Super8 films, and I might try recording them by hand. I don't have much faith in that, though. I'll probably end up mailing them in and getting them on MiniDV that way.

No idea what you'd use on a PC. On a Mac, I just use the software that comes with it.
