    Default Balance

5150 and FUCK always overshadow Balance and OU812. A shame. Balance is the best of the Sam era LPs, IMO. It's dark, it's moody, it's Sam's Fair Warning. Songs like Seventh Seal and Don't Tell Me are shining examples of Shreddy Eddie's prowess in the mid nineties. Yet there are so many folks who point out lame tracks on this bad boy...Big Fat Money? Why the frowns? BFM rips in its own way. And I've never understood the disdain toward Feelin - Feelin's got a major raging solo, and some keen choral work. Baluchitherium, great instrumental. Aftershock gets NO love, and it's a pretty cool track.

Yes, alas, Balance also has Strung Out, CSLY, and Not Enough. I've always believed that if they'd dropped CSLY and Not Enough, added Humans Being and Crossing Over instead, this one would've taken its rightful spot as Numero Uno Sambo for most people.

I agree Balance was the best Sam era Album.

I would love to hear (between us two) which I heard was one of VH best songs.

Dose any one have a boot of this song?

Killer album ( I even dig the slower stuff on it) Don't Tell me is one of my favorite VH songs. I thought it was a promising direction they were headed in. Dark, heavy (minus the couple fluff tunes). Humans Being reinforced that direction and then the bottom fell out.

All that said, Balance still ranks numero 2 behind 5150.

It's miles above FUCK though, with OU812 a solid third.

    All my opinion of course

Lyrically, I agree. One of Sam's best efforts. I thought the lyrics for CSLY were some of his best. I do like that song, but it is not my favorite. Don't Tell Me has to be my favorite. (Though I still love YRGM & the entire first effort from VH). I like the direction they were going with Balance. Sammy's dumb ass lyrics for Amsterdam I could have done without. So disappointing. (Like Source of Infection from OU812. Reminds me of I'm the One, but Sam's half assed effort on the lyrics ruins it.) On Balance, at least, Sammy's effort lyrically was much better. I've often wondered what the follow up to Balance would have been like. Guess we'll never know. I mean, think about it. After Balance, you have Human's Being. Then, consider the music from the two songs they did with Roth in '96. Awesome direction. (Don't ask me what direction VHIII was going, other then down. I don't even put it in the same context as everything else.) But, getting back on topic, I agree that it was the best effort, and I also agree that a couple of tunes could have been replaced. I had always wanted to hear Eddie do a piano peice, but, I have to be in the mood to hear Not Enough. I usually skip that one.

Well silken gowns and lights aside, I'm partial to 5150.

But Balance is okay too. I'm probably one of the few who actually liked Amsterdam, not the lyrics but Edward's playin on that was solid. Makes you wonder tho what could've been next after this album. I only skip a couple of songs on this one.

    The rest is great.

    Was this Edward's sobriety album?

I think Balance is easily the most underrated. I still may give the edge to 5150, but comparing the 2 is apples and oranges.

I think CSLY and Not Enough are great songs that change the tempo a little. I think they are a huge part of why I love the album, as they counter the rest of the album's mood for a change. Not Enough actually seems to fit into the darker mold of the rest of the album, it's just slower paced.

Aftershock is great both live and studio.

I've always seen "Balance" as Van Halen's grunge album. I know the whole album doesn't sound that way, but "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" in particular gives me that vibe. Out of every album he has ever recorded, this is Ed's best sound, in my opinion.

Balance was the album that got me into VH. I listened to it so much after it first came out. Just about every track is awesome, Ed's tone is great and Sammy's voice sounds good as usual. I think I prefer 5150 over Balance, but Balance is longer and has better production.

"5150" has the strongest material of the Hagar-era albums, but "Balance" has the best production.

I've always wondered about a bootleg of this song as well. I think I read somewhere here that the song eventually became "Once", on the 3 album.

Balance is my favorite Sammy-era album....maybe because it's the only album you can actually hear Mike's bass on.

I've always thought Balance was Van Hagar's best work. I can't hear the opening kick-drum on Seventh Seal without getting chills.

My favorite, not necessarily the best, of the Van Hagar era. I grew up in the "grunge" era, and this album was a god-send. Made me a VH fan right away. The Seventh Seal is a great song, even without a killer Eddie guitar solo. Amsterdam is in my opininion some of Eddie's finest guitar work. That seasick solo he pulls in that track is just off the hook! The whole album had just pheneomenal guitar work, and the entire mix was just so thick. Probably the best sounding of all the Van Hagar albums and maybe the best sounding VH album since the first one back in '78.

But, 5150 produced some mega songs that became live staples. And remember that VH didn't have any videos for this album at the time of it's release, unlike Balance. So maybe that speaks to me that the fact of the overall songs were better. I think Sammy was a better lyricist in '86, but Eddie sounded better in '95. Just my two cents...
