It wasn't one song in particular, it was the entire Van Halen 1 8-track my older brother listened to. Yes, 8-track. I was sucked into VH mostly by Ed....even though I was only about 11 years old, I was mesmerized by the amazing guitar sound.

When I was 9 my brother had this junky litte Gremlin (car) with a new, pretty loud stereo. I distinctly remember hearing Eruption and realizing that I had never heard anything like it, and I totally dug it. Then when he played Runnin' With the Devil, it was over. I was hooked.

The first one I ever heard, "Dance the Night Away" in '79. When I soon
thereafter heard VH1 at a friend's house, it kinda went over my Kiss fan
head, but even at the tender age of 12, I knew they were the heir apparent
just based on the aforesaid single. They would not let me down for 7 more
    glorious years.

I think the first song that pulled me in was Pretty Woman, I was young and stupid. But I saved my paper route money and bought the Diver Down LP. By the time 1984 came, I had become a complete VH freak.

Funny story, around 1983 a local station was doing a 2 hour block of Halen at midnight on a Sat. and I sat there for two hours turning my tape deck on and off recording each song. What I night, it was so exhilarating as I became exposed to the greatest catalog of music I had ever heard.

I miss those days musical exploration, as I built the foundation for my musical soul.

"I'm the One" was the first I heard and that's all it took.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

For me, it was seeing them do what was to become Girl Gone Bad in the US Feastival broadcast back in '83. I was actually a fan a little before that but that was the moment that doomed me forever...

Ahh yes, the ol' sit-in by the tape recorder and radio. I remember recording many a VH interview that way, along with the US Festival simulcast.

    I miss back when too.

What I remeber from those radio days is it was always Alex and Dave doing
the interviews and they were always cutting up so much you barley make
anything out from all the laughter. Alas...

It was Best Of Both Worlds that introduced me to Van Halen. Wasn't till I recieved 1984 that I had to have everything they ever laid down on tape. Drop Dead Legs was just it for me, and still is.

There's no other song in the history of rock that exudes everything I feel rock music is about. Sexy, dirty, groovy, etc. Can you dig it?

I'm only 30 so I fondly remember the song 1984 and the sonic keyboard blast coming from my older brothers "gulp" tape recorder. Then I had to hear the rest of them. I remember LOVING "girl gone bad" and "house of pain" at 11 yrs old no less. Another song I had a jones for was "where have all the good times gone?" My all time favorite is still "un FUCKING chained" Maybe my all time favorite song period.
