Joss Whedon's Serenity (and Firefly) Thread

Anyone else seen this movie (Serenity) or the series (Firefly)?

I don't consider myself a "Whedonite". I've never watched an episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or "Angel". I had heard about the movie, Serenity, coming out and had heard a bunch of great things about "Firefly", the series. Amazon had the series on DVD for $30 (with free shipping!), so I decided to take a chance on it.

Am I ever glad I did!! What a great show!! The central character is Malcom Reynolds, captain of the firefly class ship, Serenity. He is best described as the Han Solo we know and love from Star Wars (original) and Empire. Like Han from the original Star Wars, Mal isn't afraid to shoot first. He's quick with his gun and the wise-cracks.

His crew consists of Zoe, the first mate; Wash, the pilot and husband to Zoe; Kaylee, the engineer/mechanic; Jayne, the muscle; the completely smokin' Inara, the registered companion (escort); Simon, the medic/doctor; and his crazy (quite literally) sister, River. Simon and River are fugitives from the goverment, the Alliance. Simon broke River out of a government facility where she was being experimented on.

The characters are phenomenal! They are so well fleshed out and all so different. As you watch the series, you just love them all.

They use guns with bullets. Ray guns are rare (but do crop up here and there). There are no aliens. It's 500 years in the future and Earth has been used up. Humans have found another star system consisting of 12 planets and hundreds of moons to colonize. This is where they mix in the western genre with the sci-fi. This new star system is a frontier. The colonized planets and moons are frontier towns. The mixing of the genres completely works. Much better than you would think.

Put I'm really here to pimp the movie. You absolutely do not have to see the series to enjoy the movie. Enough back story is told that you will not get lost. Your only handicap is that you won't go in already loving the characters, but that's true of any movie (except maybe sequels). Serenity brings the action, the humor, and the tension. I loved this movie and saw it twice this weekend. I plan on going again to take other friends.

Go see it. It's a cheaper gamble than buying the DVDs. But I'd be surprised if you don't hunt down the DVDs after enjoying the movie. Check it out and let me know.

    Bad thread title?

    BUMP.

Wow! 2 whole replies? Got a few views, but just 2 replies?

I don't know what you have or haven't heard about SERENITY, but I thought with all the Star Wars/sci-fi fans on this board, this thread might get a little more action.

But I'm not feeling sorry for me or my thread. I'm feeling bad for the movie. It's gotten great reviews but had a somewhat soft opening weekend (#2 at the box offfice with $10.5 million, came in behind FlightPlan in it's second week).

    Some reviews:

Ebert & Roeper - "Two thumbs up."

Los Angeles Times - "A highly entertaining piece of genre-blending fun. A strongly acted, well-written story fortified by riveting action sequences. 'Serenity' should delight Director Joss Whedon novices as much as the already converted."

Chicago Tribune - "A brash, funny, action-packed bit of sci-fi ecstasy"

The New York Times - "Superior in almost every respect to... (the) aggressively more ambitious 'Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.'"

The Detroit News - "A great sci-fi adventure. A blast of sci-fi energy that makes you realize how good the 'Star Wars' movies could have been."

If you're a Han Solo fan, there's no reason why you won't thoroughly enjoy 'SERENITY'. The weekend is here, you don't really have anything going. Go check this out. If you do have something planned, cancel it and go see 'SERENITY'. IMO, it's that good.

Thanks for the tip. I had a good feeling about Serenity and it's nice to hear it's NOT a piece of crap...

What's it rated? How suitable is it for, say, an 8 year old that saw Episode 3 and was fine with it?

Should an 8 year old see it?

PG-13. There are some scenes of "intense violence", which is essentially a few people ending up on the business end of a pointy object.

I was hesitant to take my 8 year old to Episode 3 after seeing it, but then my sister took him w/o consulting me and he was fine. I ended up taking him again. So, I'm concerned with what my 8 year old sees and how he will handle it. He handled Ep. 3 just fine.

There is a scene where there are a lot of dead bodies lying around. Some are decaying and some are mummified. Not sure how my 8 year old would process that. Other than that one scene, I think my son would love this movie.

It is scary at times. It's intense at times. It's pretty sad in a couple of places. This movie plays on your emotions in a big way, like Ep. 3 wanted to. I've seen it twice and I'll be taking some friends to see it again. I love this movie.

So, should you take your 8 year old? I dunno. I'm not making it a point to take mine, but I'm sometimes overly cautious. Sorry if that's not much help.

No, that was helpful. I won't take him, he can be a big puss sometimes, why take the chance. Which also means I guess I'll wait for PPV, since I ain't goin by myself...

Alternative for those concerned about PG-13 rating.

"Serenity" was originally a TV series called "Firefly". Definitely less intense, but still really great. The show is collected on a DVD set. If $30 is a reasonable entertainment gamble for you, those are something you can enjoy with your son.

"Serenity" is one of the best SciFi movies to come down the pike in a long time. Tons of quotable lines, great dialog.
