    Default Studio Reference Monitors

I was looking for some advice on purchasing some studio reference monitors for use with a PC-based home demo studio I'm looking at putting together soon. Just looking for the biggest bang for the buck and figured you guys could point me in the right direction. Really don't wanna spend much more than a couple hundred bucks. Any advice?

    Thanks in advance...

My advice is to go for the alien abduction story. Look bemused, dishevelled and on the verge of tears as you recount your story of intrusive and degrading medical tests.
Worked for me anyway. I still have colleagues asking me what it is like to fuck a green womanoid with seventeen breasts.
Alternatively just walk in and inform everyone that alcoholism is indeed a disease and that they should be less judgemental and perhaps a little more supportive."

I've got a pair of Alesis Monitor 1's that are great. The monitor 2's were too big and woofy for true reference.

NS10's are the industry standard but I think they blow and are too expensive.

Just be sure to run an eq before the amp and set-up your studio accordingly. Put on a familiar CD and eq it until it sounds right to you and you should be all set. This will keep you from unknowingly pumping more bass or treble in to a mix and then bringing it out to your car and realizing it sounds awful.

    Good luck!

    Bill,
I'm really not an expert on monitors, but I can tell you what I bought.

About a year ago, I was in the same boat. After a little research, I bought a pair of 75 watt Fostex PM0.5's. They're great for what I'm doing. If your looking for a "near field" or "Desktop" monitor they're worth a look at $299 a pair from Musicians Friend. They're clean and transparent. I'm running them through a Digitech GNX3. If you want "big bottom end" You'll probably want to run them with a sub.

If I had it to do over though, I'd buy the bigger Fostex PM1's for the extra $50 bucks!

    Good luck
    Brian

I have a set of behringer B2031 active monitors, easy on the budget, I think $350 if I remember correct. No amp needed that way, they are very adjustable sound wise.

I dont think I turned them on when you were here, If you get close before you buy any, feel free to stop by.
