    Default Why a Dave reunion?

Before I begin, let me state that I'm a David Lee Roth fan. I'm also a Sammy Hagar, and shoot me, a Gary Cherone fan. I've seen a lot of people say that a Roth/VH reunion would make a ton of money. Can I just ask what makes you people think this would happen?

Dave seems to have been forgotten about completely nowadays. The only DLR cd that anyone in my town seems to have is Diamond Dave. What do you think people who were Roth fans would say if Diamond Dave was the first Dave album they had heard since EEAS? Since 1984? Diamond Dave is a trainwreck, with only one listenable track on the whole CD. Once again, the Dave era is my favorite era of Van Halen.

I would love to see VH with Dave just because it's VH with Dave. I'd buy the eventual Best Of 3 CD for the new song. But who else besides the hardcore VH fanbase are going to shill the large amount for ticket prices to see them?

I don't want this thread to turn into a Dave vs. Sam vs. Gary thread. I'm just saying that, in my opinion, I do not think that a Dave/VH tour will be successful. And honestly, I don't think it will ever happen. I think the true cause of Van Halen's untimely demise was infact Van Halen 3. VH3 was the ultimate bait and switch. And I'm part of that freaking 3 Brigade!

So, anyway, Van Halen's last hurrah with Dave - we all want it. But would it be a success or an embarassment?

    It depends.

In financial terms, it'd be a no brainer. They would probably sell out 20k seat arenas across the country on a tour, new music or not, because people would attend in one of three groups: the nostalgic folks looking to relive the memories, the younger fans having never seen Dave and Ed together, and the looky-loos hoping for the possibility of the freakshow.

As far as the legacy is concerned....it could be an embarassment. Or it could be a complete redemption. It would largely depend on their abilities in consistently delivering and executing adequate performances, as well as meshing a moderate level of give-and-take chemistry, the latter a lofty goal for those hard-won fifty year old egos of high maintenance queens like Davey and Eddie.

One thing is likely, however...those folks expecting to see a virtual replay of the Hide Your Sheep days would almost certainly be disappointed. Age, all the water under the bridge, and no longer being the top of the heap would contribute their own additions to such a reunion.

What I always wonder, about this old as the hills subject? I can easily see Dave convincing the other boys that there's plenty of catalogue other than the Sam era, and that he'd be loathe to sing any Sam tunes. But on the flip side of the coin, would Ed ever agree to play any of Dave's solo efforts, as he once did with Sam?

Methinks not. I gotta say, seeing Ed crank out Yankee Rose or Just like Paradise would be weird. Maybe not in the good way.

It would be a success on all levels, just the extent of which is the only question. If done without proper PR and $$$ to back it, it will be only a minimal success.

As far as Roth playing Hagar, I could see him picking out some tunes(if he has to) and modifying them to really work for them. If you never thought, I can't Drive 55 or One Way to Rock was Weird than Yankees Rose should be fine for ya. I know MA wouldn't want to hear no talks of SHyboy though.

You answered your own question with that one line.

As a Sammy fan, I've resigned myself to believe VH with Sam is a done deal, and I'm OK with it. If it's true, the Phx show last year was a helluva last hurrah for my favorite group.

So, with that chapter closed, only one unwritten chapter remains, and that is DLR and EVH onstage for one more go. May be good. May be bad. May be somewhere in between. But I'll be there no matter what.

I think that's unlikely. I just can't see Dave agreeing to sing Right Now despite its commercial success. Even assuming they'd want to address the Sam era catalogue, it's not like they'd be having Dave put out the harder stuff (which he'd sound better at, i.e., Good Enough, Seventh Seal)...they'd surely be wanting to crack out the radio hits, of course...Poundcake, Best of Both Worlds, etc.

I gotta say, the idea of hearing Dave doing his version of Poundcake literally makes my blood freeze. Ick. No way.

One guaranteed highlight of a modern era Dave set (hopefully)....

I honestly believe (although a VH reunion with anyone would be just as great to me) that a VH reunion with Dave would still do well because their music is still heard on radios everyday, and people who grew up in late 70's and early 80's never forgot it. They are a legendary group, and while saying it would be a massive success could be an overstatement, I can't see it being a flop.

1996 would have been a great time to do it. Now, who knows. Some people think Dave would be the problem on a full length tour but as we saw from the 2004 tour, Eddie can easily be a problem.

For me, I never saw DLR with VH in concert. Yeah, I have plenty of bootlegs but I want to see the magic live.

it might not be as whacked as you think for DLR to sing some sammy songs..but only in this context...
if you remember, before sammy came along and before the breakup w/ dave, Ed had alot of 5150 written..and that was with DLR in mind..so dave interpreting some 5150 songs could be very cool in my mind...
    at least different..

other than that, there aint no way dlr would sing anything from the red rocker...just no fucking way..but that isnt to say he wopuldnt have fun with the whole idea....

    Default Mistake

I think two reunion tours in a row with two different singers is pushing it a bit don't you think?
I would love to see as I have seen VH with Dave three times but I don't think it would be the same and Dave's voice would almost be as bad as Ozzy's is these days.
