Default Seperation anxiety of the 4 wheel kind.....

Yesterday I went thru the grueling 6 hour process of buying a new car.
I traded in my Nissan Frontier Desert Runner that took me forever to find just 3 years ago on a more family friendly Dodge Intrepid that is in pristine condition and practically brand new. It's all leather, everything electric and a 4 disc CD changer. My Nissan had none of those luxeries but was a excellent truck nonetheless.
My question is as I was driving out of the lot I glanced back at my Nissan sitting there and I thought I was going to shed a tear. I had this weird rush of loyalty like I was abandoning my best friend. I was thinking how loyal it had been and had never had a mechanical issue and had never let me down along with all the fun times I had had in it. I felt horrible, almost to the point that I had this urge to call off this new deal and run back and rescue her from some other uncaring driver who would let her get scatched up, not change her oil and never keep her clean.
Has anyone ever had this same experience when giving up a vehicle they really liked.
And yes, I still feel bad right now!!

I kinda felt bad when I traded in my first car (98 S-10 ZR2) for my current 2003 Silverado. It was the first car that I ever owned, and it treated me well for the most part. The simple fact is that I simply outgrew it. I needed a bigger truck.

How did it take you 6 hours to buy a car????? It took me 2 hours from the moment I decided to look for a GTO to the point where I was pulling up in my parents driveway with my new toy.

I know how you feel. When I bought my new car, I loved it, but I still felt kind of bad about giving up my old one. It was nothing special, just a 2000 V6 Mustang, but I never spent a dime on repairs, it still rode well and everything. But like you said, the memories of that car still make me feel good. I drove it all over the place to so many cool areas of the country. It was the site of my first roadhead, and head for that matter. But I just wanted something new, so I bought an '05 Mustang GT. And I've had nothing but problems, and long for the old days of my crappy V6 Mustang.

It took 6 hours because I drove 4 different car's. Then we haggled over price, then we haggled over trade in value, then we haggled over additional second car junker trade in (which I ended up getting a additional 30,000 mile warranty for) then we haggled over my interest rate and from which financial group I wanted my loan through. Yep, it took forever but I got the salesman to drive up to my house and pick up my wife's old beater with the broken fuel gauge. I did not want to drive it the 22 miles to the dealership because (A). Did'nt now how much gas was really in the tank and it very well could have run out of fuel. (B) It was pouring rain and only the Driver side Wiper works.
Not to metion the thing was a complete piece of shit and we could not have sold ourselves for anymore than $300.
So to get the sales guy to do that stuff really showed me he would go to extremes to make the sale.
Thank God, there was a Starbucks next door. 6 hours but well worth it!!

I still miss my Dodge D-50 4x4 which was my first vehicle. I saw it probably 7 years after I traded it in - saw it at the mall. I pointed out the 'love stains' my women and I left on the bench seats to my girlfriend as we looked inside the truck. "That one was Tammy, that one was Jenny, oh, that one was Renee..." ahh, those were good times...

I miss my green machine big wheel.
Anyway, I usually hate my vehicles when I trade or sell that I do not care anymore about them.
    Just go for it!

I think it's natural for anyone to feel that way. A car is an investment that takes care of you like you take care of it. Sometimes not so much, but you get the idea. When I traded my wife's Escort on a Taurus, it was bittersweet. The car was starting to run poorly, but it was the car we spent a lot of time in together travelling, going out on dates ( my car was a POS ), ansd also the car we took our daughter home from the hospital in. You remember each thing individually.

Don't worry little camper...you'll get over it in time. Until then, you have some great memories.

For me "separation anxiety" feeling kicked in as I handed over the keys of my older car to the salesman. Felt as if I were breaking up with a boyfriend -you know it's the right thing to do, but it still hurts.

My new Jeep did a great job in helping me get over "it" by the time I arrived home!

I still think about the first car I had, it was my Dad's and my family agreed after he passed away, that I should have it as I had a 7 month old baby. It was a gold Triumph Accliam and went like shit off a stick. I guess it had that special meaning cos it was my dad's, I passed my test in it and I always felt he was with me when I drove in it. I sobbed when I had to let it go.

    LOL!

There's a classic scene from,"Say Anything," where John Cusack's character, Lloyd Dobler, is feelin' blue because his gal broke up with him and he goes to a Gas N Sip to ask some dudes for some advice. They all tell him hilarious things...one of them, after Lloyd yells and throws his beer bottle, is,"Dude, I don't even feel that way about my car."...

I won't get rid of my '98 Dakota R/T hopefully ever. I had a '82 GMC Van (Stabbin' Cabin) that I was glad to give to my brother when I bought my Dodge. My R/T is 1 of 292 built that year and 1 of 101 red ones. In this day and age, that is extremely rare. I have 128K miles on it and have had it for over 7 years. I would be a fool to get rid of it. I may buy other cars down the road, but I'll always keep the Dakota.

I hear your stories, people, and that convinces me even more to keep it forever...
