    Default Supervolcanos

After watching a series of programmes on Yellowstones supervolcano, I gotta say it kinda spooked me. I never really took much notice of such things as they seemed to have no relevance to me.

Does anyone here have an interest in these things or have any knowledge? I'd be interested to hear what you think or know.

I have been facinated with volcanoes for a long time. The movie on Discovery channel a month or so about Yellowstone was pretty good. Here is a website with a ton of information:

That was on tonight too. A kind of docu-drama, with the characters talking as if after the event?

So whats the chance of world annialation in our lifetime??

Interesting topic. Just watched a show about the Mt. St. Helen's eruption, and that Mt. Rainier's overdue for an eruption. Pretty interesting. They say the slurry slides can happen at any time and cover everything in its path.

    Scary stuff.

Yep - Thats the show I was talking about. The chances of that happening in our lifetime is probably zero.

Aparently the Yellowstone one is 600,000 years overdue!!! Some of the predicated senarios are complete destuction of 2/3 of the US. The sun being blocked out worldwide due to the gases emited and basically, the next ice age!!

This was on Discovery, and it is Yellowstone they are talking about. The entire Yellowstone area is a huge supervolcano.

Yellowstone is not 600,000 years overdue. It erupts cataclismicly (sp?) every 600,000 years, and it has been 640,000 years since the last major eruption.

Rainier is the one of the first things I see when I step out onto my deck every morning to leave. It is simply awe inspiring to look at. Should it blow, most certainly the city I live in will look like a massive snowstorm of grey fell. Cities like Tacoma and Enumclaw where Olo lives could quite possibly be vaporized or covered under so many feet of muck there would be no chance of rebuilding and absolutly no survivors.
It is true they have all these doomsday scenarios of what will happen but more likely than not we will never see it in our lifetimes.
It's weird I remember when St. Helens blew that Sunday morning, no one here felt it or knew anything until the news came on yet the media claimed it was felt as far a Canada. No Rainer, if that were to blow, my house would certainly be it's own Wabo Rita Shaker, hold the ash cloud!!
Of course there is the saying "Never say Never".

It's sat under the whole of yellowstone national park. Nice!! It was on discovery channel.

Basically, a shit load of magma is bubbling away in a pocket 50 miles wide and 40 miles long, not that deep under the surface, which causes the geysers and hot springs etc in the park. Basically it's HUGE fucker that, if it blows, which it will at some point (hopefully not for a long time yet) will make St Helens look like a back garden firecracker!!

    Another good site.

Wow. Best to not let that dampen a Saturday night.

Hopefully our children won't have to deal with it either.

    It's all good!

If I remember right, there are 7 known supervolcanoes in the world. Yellowstone is the largest/most active/dangerous

I think, after looking into this, the most shocking thing for me was realising I didn't even know that it, and the other supervolcanos existed. I've always, like Zeo been interested in the St Helens, Rainier ones etc, and the past ones, Vesuvius and Krakatoa but not these.
