Default The quasi-official Steely Dan Thread

Just wanted to know if anyone here enjoys the music of Walter Becker (bass/guitars) and Donald Fagen (vocals/keyboards), a/k/a Steely Dan.

Steely Dan is hard group to categorize: I guess the best way to do it would be to call their music jazz-flavored pop and rock with a funky edge. Very challenging music with Becker and Fagen being accompanied by the best jazz/rock/funk session musicians available. It's hard to sometimes figure out what their lyrics are about, as they are as challenging as their music.

Definitely something to listen to when you're in a more laid-back relaxing mode, though I can listen to them anytime. They originally started out as a group, but eventually stopped touring after a couple of albums in 1974 and became a studio-only duo of Becker and Fagen (plus session musicians) for the remainder of the seventies. After reuniting in 1993, however, they have toured many times and released two studio albums.

Among the musicians of note who've played and worked with the Dan over the years are Michael McDonald and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of The Doobie Brothers, Chuck Rainey, Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, Larry Coryell, Bernard Purdie and the late Cornelius Bumpus, who also played in a later version of the Doobie Brothers.

Great stuff. Best album is Aja. There are several compilations out there to get anyone started. If you want a single disc, get A Decade Of Steely Dan and if you want a two-disc set, get Show Biz Kids: The Steely Dan Story 1972-80 . The Citizen Steely Dan box set collects all their studio albums from the original era of 1972-1980 (Can't Buy A Thrill through Gaucho) plus a couple of rarities.

Jeff Porcaro also played with Steely Dan on some song.. Don't remember which one..
I think the best songs are "kid charlamagne", "reelin' in the years" and "dirty work" but I like the rest a lot too.. Very good music.. I have all the old albums. Haven't bought the 90s- albums but I plan to..

I have A Decade Of Steely Dan - a few more songs I'd like to see on there ("Josie", "Dirty Work", "Time Out Of Mind") and some good musicianship, but I haven't heard enough of their studio albums to get excited enough to buy one.

IF you can find it, "Steely Dan Confessions" is a take-off on HBO's "Taxicab Confessions", and features three "rides" with Don and Walt and various hijinks. They did it to promote "Everything Must Go", and it's worth a search. Try the official website, and don't forget to check out the various writings and letters of Walt's. Hilarious.

Anyway, "Katy Lied" kicks all kinds of ass, y'all.

Steely Dan Confessions was included on a deluxe edition of the Everything Must Go CD. Don't know if that version's still in print, but it's a good album and the DVD is hilarious. The drunk blonde doesn't even realize that she's being dissed by Becker and Fagen because their dry humor just goes over her head.

Absolutely LOVE the Dan! After noodling around w/Decade, then Aja, Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied, last year I bought the box set: Citizen Steely Dan: 1972-1980. Just superb. Can't say enough about the innovative sounds of these two guys.

Don & Walt kick ass. The live album has some of the sickest playing on it I've ever heard. I'm a hardcore funk junkie, though...

If you guys haven't heard it before, check out Walter's solo disc, "11 Tracks Of Whack". GREAT stuff...

I also highly recommended the live DVD Two Against Nature if you want to hear even more sick playing. If you have DTS capability for your DVD player and receiver, I recommend listening to the surround track that way. Excellent surround mix which brings out all the instruments and stellar playing.

Well stop wondering and go out and BUY it!!!!

Honestly, one of the best concert DVDs ever. Phenomenal playing and excellent sound. I also recommend the Classic Albums: Aja DVD. Donald, Walter, producer Gary Katz and some of their session players go back into the studio to recount their experiences recording what, in my opinion, is the all-time best Steely Dan album, Aja.

They even have an in-studio reunion with some of the classic session players and musicians of their current lineup. If you've seen any of the Classic Albums DVDs, you know they also play the multitrack tapes and isolate parts so you can hear how a track is built. The only glaring omission on the DVD is no interviews or mention of Steve Gadd's phenomenal drumming on the title track. Aside from that, required watching for a Dan-head.

Always liked the Dan. They were supposed to play here a few years ago. Had great seats. Cancelled. One of our Local stations, 102.3 , then Mountainplays a lot of Steely Dan. In fact, I attended a meeting with the DJ's and told them anyone who plays Steely Dan on a regular basis is a great radio station. Always liked Babylon Sisters and FM. I still have the FM soundtrack album.
