    Default Freemasons

are there any linkers here who are Freemasons? I know someone who is a mason and said he would petition me to get into the masonic lodge, and it seems really interesting given the history of Freemasonry. Anyone know anything about masons? He hasnt told me very much about it.

I actually worked with 2 guys from the Bahamas that were indeed masons...very secretive regarding activities, yet I did figure out that there is a secret "sign" that they pass to each other, along with what would seem to be certain "levels" that one must attain.

The Simpson's once did a hilarious send-up of the masons, with Patrick Stewart (Piccard from Star Trek: The Next Generation) that was actually quite insightful. Homer was a "legacy" pledge, as it turned out that Abe Simpson was a member.

most Masonic Lodges have required, since the early 19th century, that a candidate must profess a belief in a Supreme Being.
    well, that keeps me out.

I heard they believe in a supreme being, but don't believe in Jesus. I also read it was a link to the Illuminati and all that conspiracy shit. Interesting if nothing else.

Masons come from varied religious beliefs and creeds, yet all believe in one God. My Grandfather and Father are lifelong Masons... They never asked me, thankfully - since I had no interest... My Grandparents devout Episcopalians now live in a Masonic Lodge retirement community... They were also involvedin a "club" called "The Eastern Star"...

My grandfather was one, he was also a Shriner. I guess the two groups tend to work together at times, or at least did back in the day, but I don't know much about it. From what I understand they do quite a bit of public service type stuff but don't publicize it, keep things pretty secret.

Big radio push up here for membership recently, and they actually opened their temples up to the public last weekend. I guess they are hurting for membership.

    Freemason sight

This is what they list to the question of "what is freemasonry" in their FAQ on that site:

With over 3 million members, Freemasonry is the largest fraternal organization in the world, as well as the largest philanthropy. Masonic principles teach the value of relief – and Freemasons give over $2 million A DAY to charity, much of it through the donations of individual Masons and Lodges. More than 70% of these donations support the general public. Freemasons also support a vast number of charitable organizations, such as the Shriners Hospitals for Children and Masonic Learning Centers for Children. Freemasonry proposes to “make good men better” by teaching – with metaphors from geometry and architecture -- about building values around great universal truths.

They list a few historical Masons on the site too - Ben Franklin, George Washington, Paul Revere, John Hancock, and more recently, Gerald Ford.
