    Default family vacation ideas

hey folks, i'm looking for some family vacation ideas. me and my wife have 2 daughters (6 and 4) and are looking to spend a week somewhere within eight hours of the detroit, MI area. looking for places that are very kid-friendly.

the budget is pretty modest ($2K'ish). we've considered places like gatlinburg, TN and the UP in michigan.

    any other suggestions???

    tx!

Tennesee is pretty cool in all, Memphis and Nashville make a great week. Only problem is they are not real kid friendly.
Gatlinburg, to be quite honest with you was such a dissapointment. Basically there was 1 street with a Hard Rock Cafe and whole bunch of totally cheesy souvenier shops. We were really dissapointed. We actually planned on 3 nights there but only stayed 1 because it was so cheesy.
Now Memphis and Nashville...totally killer! Beale Street. Graceland, The Gibson Factory and the best barbeque you will ever have. We liked "The Pig on Beale" dry ribs with a bunch of sauce for dipping.....yowza.
One place I have heard good things about but have never been to myself is Viginia Beach, VA as well as Myrtle Beach in the Carolinas.
Although you may want to consider my own backyard Seattle, lot's to do and the weather is still great this time of year.
If you made it too Seattle, no doubt you would have to visit a little town called Enumclaw. Rumour is a certain band from LA likes to play a certain mod's backyard.
Could lightning strike twice....only in Enumclaw!!

If you decide to go to gatlinburg, TN let me know I live just a few min. away and I can let you know just about anything you need to know about the area and things to do. There's plenty of things to do with your family there. Like Dollywood and Ripley's Aquarium Just to name a couple. If your coming in Oct. or Nov. the fall color is awsome!!! Let me know and I can tell you some nice cabins or hotels that I have stayed at.

Niagara Falls...both on the US and Canadian sides. Take the maid of the mist boat right up close to the falls. You get a bit wet and the kids will love it! Journey behind the falls, check out the butterfly conservitory and then on to Clifton Hill for a wax museum or two. Hard Rock for dinner and then see the lights on the falls at night! Very family friendly. See http://www.niagaraparks.com/ for a day pass including the bus back and forth. If you have a few more days come to Toronto and go up the CN tower and see a baseball game in the Skydome or some shopping in the Eatons center.

Why only 8 hours? I just took my 4 and 2 year olds to Disney, it's not a bad drive (took me about 17 hours both ways), well under $2000 food included. Is it time restraints?
