I'm sure it's "modified". Mine doesn't sound like that either, but it looked like a glock or 45.

The Glock 18 is made by Glock Firearms, Austria. As one in a large family of over 15 guns, the Glock 18 is the most extraordinary. It is capable of either Fully Automatic, or Semi auto fire. The Glock 18 is the fully automatic version of the Glock 17. It is light, inexpensive and easy to handle. The Glock 18 in fully automatic mode is capable of 1100- 1300 RPM (Rounds Per Minute). The Glock 18 is restricted and not available to civilians, more information on this special Glock model is available: http://www.glock.com/body_g18.htm

Wow. I love my 17 but would gladly trade up for that My next firearm selection is probably gonna be a Romanian version of the AK-47 with a thirty round clip. Have been looking at several different variations of the AK (Maudi, Sar 1 and Wasr10) but am waiting for the gun show to hit town in October. Best deal so far is $399 with two 30 round clips, bayonet and fire suppressor.

if you're buying that AK-47 as a novelty, to impress your girlfriend, or to doink around on the range now and again, it'll do. but if you're buying that weapon to actually USE, think again.

AK-47s are popular mostly because they're cheap--as in cheaply made, so they don't cost much. they're heavy, noisy as hell, worthless past 100 yds and any optics you wanna mount are major pain in the ass (pretty pointless, too, given the inaccuracy at distance.) and the safety mechanism sucks, totally unreliable, so be carefully you don't blow your own head off.

if you positively MUST get an AK-47, get a Bulgarian made model with a forged receiver. the standard receiver is stamped, like a toy, and has a tendency to explode after a few thousand rounds have passed through it.

if you want to be smart, get an AR-15, the civi version of the venerable M-16. it's better made, lighter, reliable (at least so as compared to the AK), safer, accurate to 300 yds right outta the box and optics mount easily and extend your killing range. furthermore, those .223 rounds weigh less so magazines are lighter and you can pack more into the field.

the Armalite carbine weighs about 6.75 lbs (unloaded) and the Rock River Arms carbine weighs around 8 lbs (unloaded.) if you're doing more distance shooting, go with a model with a heavier barrel.

oh, and you'll need to up your budget by another US$700, min.

My understanding is also that the AK's are the clunky Harley's of the FA world as Harleys are generally big grease slinging pieces of shit that have a cool rep.

Not really out to impress anyone with the AK except maybe myself. Opinions on this rifle are more varied than even the world of Vanhalen. Personally, I like the way it looks, is cheap(7.62 ammo is cheap also) the distinctive sound and also am told, by several ex-military people that you could literally bury this thing in mud for extended periods of time and still be able to fire it with no problems. This you would not do with an AR-15.

a person can have varying opinions on issues like aesthetics.

but weight, accuracy, reliability and other factors can be objectively tested. and the M-16 is at least reliable as the AK-47.

the "knock" against the M-16's reliability is a left-over from the earliest days of the vietnam war and has nothing to do with today's weapon.

in fact, the early "reliability problems" had nothing to do with the weapon itself but rather the chemical make-up of the propellent used in the ammunition.

early in the M-16's history, the Army insisted on using a finer-grained propellent that increased the rate of fire, but had the nasty habit of fouling the barrel and, consequently, jamming the weapon. when the Army switched back to the standard IMR propellent, the rate of fire slowed marginally, but the "reliability problem" disappeared. unfortunately, the reputation did not.

in later production life, the Army added a chrome-lined chamber and barrel, thereby further improving reliability.

one more thing: i wasn't kidding about the AK's safety issues. there's a reason why an AK-47 costs $400 and an entry-level AR-15 is $1,100--it's like a Yugo versus an Audi.

i agree with doodoo's assessment of the ar-15..damn good rifle, dependable, and more add-ons than you can shake a stick at. i have an olympic arms ar 15 with a telescoping stock, cant go wrong. but, it's accuracy is about 500 yards...was hitting bullseyes at that distance in Marine bootcamp with my m-16.
