    Default Oakland 1981

I've seen several references around here to the "infamous" show in Oakland, i think 1981.
Ive never seen it myself, so, what makes it so "infamous" ?
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

God Himself showed up, took straight shots of Jack Daniels with Dave, traded riffs with Ed, and got His Holy Freak on with every babe in the first row.

That's if you believe the internet hype, of course.

i suppose it's possible, i've seen God at a couple of VH shows over the years. Spoke with him once, briefly, seemed like an okay guy.

It's not the whole show Duke, it's only Unchained, So This Is Love and Hear About it Later. It's unique because there is so little professionally shot footage available from that era of the band. And the videos were released, you'd see them from time to time on music television shows. They are also infamous because the dream is kept alive that the rest of that show exists on film, of the same quality. It's been said that it doesn't, that they only filmed those three songs, but the dream is kept alive by fans.

To see these three videos, and then to compare them to the pro shot 1982 Maryland show and the 1983 pro shot US Festival (and then to throw in the amateur shot 1984 Montreal show), IMO the band peaked in 1981. 1984 may very well be my favorite VH album, but EVERYTHING was firing on every available cylinder in 1981.

The band continued to make great music, but they never got everything right again like they did in 1981. You can feel it. Remember when Dave said that Van Halen was like a flame and if you got close enough to it it changed your life. To watch these clips is to believe that statement.

I've seen bits of the US festival. It looks good but from a band performance point of view, they arn't very good that day.

Seeing Big Al light up the gong in Unchained kind of gives you an idea of how Insane ! that tour must have been, not to mention my all time favorite drumkit he ever unveiled on tour.

Eddie dressed like a little dutch boy ala Angus Young style school boy uniform, candy cane socks, and shredding his little Frankenstrat along a wall of blaring amps,

An insane backdrop to boot, beautiful stage, Grizzly Adam Mikey pounding that bass like he wants to mate with it, with his jumpsuit looking more like Mike the mechanic, than the bassist.

And yes Dave with his best hairdays far behind him now, sporting a tasteful outfit (no assles chaps here) thanks to those live videos that we have seen and studied countless times, is part of the reason why we want the whole show in our hands.

Then there's the '79 footage with DTNA, BU and i forget the 3rd one. That whole show has to be out there somewhere too.

There are certain things that remind me why I became a VH fan. The Oakland 81 vids are one, Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers from San Paolo 1983 is another.

It is hard to believe when you see either Dave or VH live now, but they made their legend on their live shows and with those vids you can remember why.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

My favorite Dave era video, easily.

"Got me a brand new Oakland scarf right here, I say!"

Ed, Mike and Al rip it up on that baby.

    Wow where have I been?

I totally missed this one. To see and hear the mighty VH back in the day was to hear the greatest live band of all time.

I really wish that we had all the techno stuff that they have now, to be able to have preserved more of that show. All I've got are hazy memories. It was awesome, specially Sunday Afternoon in the Park. Hearing Edward's wailin guitar before the lights came up was amazing. They were playing Foreigner's Women song and halfway thru the lights went down and then came Edward's guitar. It was just amazing.

I truly believe the entire concert is out there on tape. There were cameras everywhere recording everything. I know there were.

    Amazing show!!!
