    Default Neil Schon

I just saw Journey last night and they kicked ass, especially Dean Castronovo and Neil Schon. I've always new that Neil could play his ass off, but I had no idea how honed his chops are. I always considered him a good melodic player, much like Richie Sambora, but was suprised at his fluidity, picking ability, and his long, legato licks.

I was wondering what everybody's opinion was about Schon, and what essential listening I should pick up of his. Plus, I was curious as to if anyone here had heard his new solo album and their opinion on it.

He's awesome. I'd recommend the very first three Journey albums (pre-Steve Perry) if you've never heard them. "Journey," "Look into the Future," and "Next." It's my opinion that "Next" is the weakest of the three, but that's not saying much, as all three albums are amazing. Neal's the man.

If you want current Neal stuf pick up World Play by Soul Sirkus. Lost In Translation by Jeff Scott Soto, and IonU by Schon. Also you can check out Escape by Journey, and Neal's project with Sammy in the 80's, HSAS.

Saw Neal this year with Soul Sirkus and it was an amazing experience. There were only about thirty or so of us there, so it was a real intimate gig. His playing was just unreal. Never took a break, and never let up. Just kicked our ass and left.

I think it's Journey's greatest hits Live, really kicks ass. Much more aggressive playing by Neil on the live record.

I think he's really good. Never got the recognition that he deserves because of the fact that Journey is "soft" rock.

Schon is awesome. He is the player that I would most like to play like. He was good enough at 16 for Carlos Santana to ask him to join his band.

Some really cool Journey tunes with some killer work from Neal , La Do Da, Anytime ,Lady Luck ,Walks Like a Lady, Line Of Fire, Homemade Love, Stone In Love ,Separate Ways. I`m sure there`s many other but those come to mind. Hey Sucka! I still haven`t got the "World Play" cd yet. It just bums me out that I cant` pick it up at any local record stores.

I've been following Schon since the late 70's. The guy's a great guitarist. I was hooked the first time I seen him live. It was the "Evolution" tour (I think) They did the Superjam in STL. I was glued in front of Neil. After Journey left, Sammy came on and brought Neil back for a "smokin version" of Rock Candy and it brought the freakin' house down.

Neil has gotten better and better each year. It's always a treat to watch him. I can't believe Sucka got to see him at such an intimate gig...lucky bastard

BTW...One solo recording of his that I'm not too familiar with is, I believe called "Voices"? Anyone know about that one?

    Try www.nehrecords.com or www.frontierrecords.com

DO NOT use ebay. There are fuckers selling the Deen version of World Play for like 30 bucks.

Neal is a monster! As mentioned before, pick up Journey's very 1st album. I also dig "My Home Town" from HSAS. I like to refer to his playing as "SEARING!"

His playing on Hardline's "Double Eclipse" album was very good too. Also worth checking out are the two albums with Bad English.

I'm kinda partial to his work on HSAS and early Journey myself.

But all Neal is all good.

Dude, Neal is the man!! Definitely in my top 5. Saw him live 3 times on Bad English's first tour. Amazing!

Another lost jem is his first solo cd, Late Nite. If you can find it, get it! It's more laid back and packed with feel more than shred.

I'd love to see Journey some time but tix are always about $20 more than I'd be willing to pay to see them without Steve Perry.

Neal joined Santana when he was 17 years old. To do that, he had to turn down another band...Derrik and the Dominoes. That's how friggin good Neal Schon is.

Also, check out HSAS, with Sammy Hagar , Kenny Aronson and Michael Shrieve. That album has some of his best guitar work.
