    Default SRV...and single coils!

Hey, just bought a deluxe players strat. Love the hell outta' it...no single coil buzz like most other Strats you might pick up, has the noisless pickups. Anyway, I noticed the pickups are set quite low, I was wondering if I raised them would it give a bit more punch to the singles...I know with 'buckers you just increase the distortion...curious if it would be a bit different with the singles. I am REAL happy with the tone right now so, I am VERY apprehensive to mess with anything!! Also, I am playing through a line6 Spider, and, well, like I said, great, wonderful warm bluesey tone, but, is there anything else I can do to get that SRV punch....besides upgrade to 13's, which is what I have heard he played? I have the Ibanez ts...109?? I think it is ....tube screamer around here somewhere...will that do it...? I was watching Live at the El Macambo this evening and it looks like he kicks that on for solos etc?? Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks.

So much of Stevie's tone is in his fingers and his picking. He uses an incredibly aggressive (yet controlled) picking style and has great vibrato on his fret hand. You could probably kick on an Ibanez tube screamer (or something like that) and get a little added gain which would help. Don't use too much or you'll end up losing the warmth. Just enough to beef it up a little.

hmmm...if your really lookin for a SRV tone, get some fender amps, the same single coils that are in the SRV signature strat, throw some bass frets on your neck and your pretty much set

you said it right, get fender amps like a blues duluxe or deville and a tube screamer and a wah and you will pretty much have a good tone. heavy strings help but they can also be a pain to play. have fun.

It's not like I'm a SVR "tone clone" or anything but...What pickup switch position are you using? IMO, the neck AND the middle pickup switch position is best for SRV's tone...but as Brett said, SRV's attack is key. Man that guy had ferocious hands..

A tube screamer isn't going to do much if you are playing through a Line 6 Spider. They are designed for tube amps..... It will be hard for you to get an accurate SRV tone without a tube amp. I'm not dissing Line 6. I have a Spider II half-stack and get great metal tones out of it, but SRV type stuff can't be done without tubes....My Spider doesn't sound right with pedals...

    According to Fender,
Noiseless singlecoils should be set at 8/64" on the bass side, and 6/64" on the treble side.....
And yeah, you need some 13's or 12's at least on there.....

Yeah, 13's are certainly outta' my league, I put...I think they were 12's on once and it was pretty brutal, I could play, but bends were pretty much out of the question! Thanks for all the tips. I'd love to get another Fender amp someday, but I'm not a gigging musician so it seems a little crazy to have a tube amp sitting in my music room at home with the volume set to 1 or maybe, 2 if I'm feeling crazy....I had a Hot Rod Deluxe b4 and man those suckers really can scream. The line6 gives me a lotta variety for right now. Have you guys seen Live at the El Macambo? If not get it...the people that were there, saw quite a performance!! Every time I watch it, I almost want stop playing, 'cuz I hear and see what that man could do and am just so blown away! Anyway, thanks for the tips.

Just played with a friend who plays a Strat and he had a tube screamer and it was pretty close to the SRV sound.

I'm thinking of a picking up a Strat myself, can't beat that sound, especially with the noiseless pickups.

Anyone know about the locking roller nut Fender has that is available on the strat's? Is it anybetter than a traditional strat setup?

    Thanks

I don't think the roller nut is locking...You use the rolling nut in conjunction with locking tuners. The rolling nut IS an innovation, but I don't know if it's any better than graphite and locking tuners...
