A pal of mine (whom will remain nameless for legal reasons) just built me a VH 1 strat. He popped a Duncan '59 in there and it sounds KILLER! I already have one with a custom custom in it, and that's a killer pup too, but the 59 seems more my style.

It'll get ya the brown sound, but that also depends on your amp, and course your fingers.

Well I have HEARD through my best friend sister's boyfriend father's mistress (read: Unsubstantiated) that the Duncan Custom Shop EVH- was co-designed with Eddie, then the deal fell through... or something like that. They SWARE it stands for Evenly Voiced Harmonics and not Eddie Van Halen...They recently changed the name to the '78 model for evenly voiced harmonics ($168- NOT CHEAP!)...It's supposed to be a killer pickup regardless, not a high gain one (gain freaks beware) but tons of tone. I would kill to play it through my friends Plexi! http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/customshop.shtml
You can also do a Google for the Duncan EVH pickup.

The Duncan Custom Custom is supposed to be great too, and cheaper. I used to use JBs, and Distortions back in the 80s (the distortions had NO tone, just gain). The JB's were pretty cool, kind of a middle of the road rock/fusion pickup. They sounded really good in the Kramer Barettas... I hated it in my old Ibanez RG 550 though.

IMHO the Wolfgang pickup is one of the best ever made (rumor had it they were Dimarzios, they never let that secret out)...but you have to buy a Wolfgang to get it. It has more gain than my EMG 81/85 Actives...Yes it does! And the tone blows them away. I am devising a machine that clones pickups (yeah I wish!!!). The old Ernie Ball EVH ones were good too.

On the Dimarzio side, I have heard a lot of people like the Tone Zone...Some people claim that was in the Wolfgangs, I don't buy it but take it for what it's worth.

Ultimately it is player preference- it makes a difference what guitar you put it in, what amp you play it through, and whose fingers are playing it.

    Good luck.

I have to agree with you on that. I've had/played alot of different guitars, with alot of different pickups, and those Wolfie pickups are among the best...Just a little too hot for me (I usually play with the volume control on 9), but otherwise I love them.
