Default Eddie then and Eddie now

The first time I saw Van Halen in concert was in 1981. I was 13 years old. The Last time I saw Van Halen was September 2004. The difference between Eddie then and now is as different as the differnce between me at 13 and me at the age I am now. Big difference.
My opinion... Valerie is Eddies one and only really true love. Valerie loves Eddie but has taken on the role of one who will not enable his drinking in hopes that she and their son will mean more to him than the bottle. Meanwhile, the bottle has him around the neck. We are going to lose him to the bottle unless he, Eddie, or someone who loves him like his brother gets hold of him and safely gets it out of his system. The problem with booze is that you can't go cold turkey after so many years of drinking it everyday. It will put the user into a life threatening circumstance to stop on the spot. He may well live longer drinking than he would stopping cold. Chemo, or radiation therapy can and does destroy the surrounding tissues thus Eddies teeth may be brown and brittle and renders him unable to enjoy a good steak and potato meal. Thus again he is unable to keep a healthy diet and he appears skinny. In 1981, I made my way to the front of the stage and I was right in front of Eddie. I remember him looking out at the multitude of people playing so beautifully. He looked down at me and smiled because he caught me looking and being awe struck at the movement of his fingers. I smiled back.
Big smile.. You know what I mean.... How would you smile back at Ed you know.??
Anyway. Fast forward to last September....I went I love all access. What better way to turn 30 somehing than feel like a teenager and go see Van Halen.............. what?
Anyway. =) Was a blast. Eddie was there on the stage very friendly and ready to play any song this one girl wanted to hear, she was very pretty and looked a whole lot like Valerie in her younger years..... Eddie at the end of it all gave high fives to the sound check crowd and when he came to me he looked at me like I was someone who looked like someone he knew... He couldn't after all of this time remember a 13 year old girl he smiled at so many years ago.... I know I reminded him of something though, he couldn't place it, I will never forget though...I am just a fan of his music. A person who worried at the news of his cancer, smiled the first time I saw a picture of him and his son, one of many who wish him happiness. Want to just say thank you for the music, thanks for being part of my teenage years, My adult years....I don't think he is a god. He is Eddie, Sincere, sometimes sweet, mostly blunt, Eddie. He is a guy with guy problems, dad worries just like all dad's. He has given us, his listneners something to behold and cherish. Let the rest be his, yes? We love him yes, we worry yes, we must let him live his life in peace... We will always appreciate what he has shared with us. We all share that. Thanks Eddie. So we paid your rent, what else is new? Get back to work huh?

That's too bad cuz you missed out on a cool post that came from the heart. Nice job Chase.

Only thing is, I hope you didn't go to the 2004 show with the expectation that he would be the same after all these years. Last time I saw him, at 17 y/o, was at the US Festival. When I saw them in 2004, I didn't know what to expect...partly because of what I had heard on the message boards, and partly because I knew after cancer, a divorce, and living the party life all these years that he probably would be different, and that it might be reflected in his music.

Lucky for us, Eddie was "on" that night (Staples 8/19 in L.A.), and so I was pleased with him and the show. I had a great time, and have a good memory to cherish.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

See, Ed is an alcoholic. It's a disease like any other. He can't kick it and his history pretty much shows he never will. You have conflicting sentiments in your post...in one breath you are saying he is an alcoholic and with the other breath you're saying have compassion for him, etc. Ed has access to the internet...I'm just guessing he doesn't want to read about people pitying him or pointing out his disease. No offense at all...I totally get where you are coming from...but I'm a solution type guy...and with this situation, there appears to be no SOLUTIONS!

    Memories

very nicely written. I know how ya feel...VH just reminds us of our youth..therefore we somewhat expect the members to still appear in that physical youth...yet we know that is impossible..afterall, we are only human and we old get old and have our problems., Anyway...just enjoy the music, relish in the memories...and if VH ever tour again..I'll be there..even if I'm hunched over with a cane..and Eddie's in a wheelchair...I'll be there!!

As a long time fan, 20 something years - I hate to even think this, but it's not gonna surprise me to hear in the next 5 or 6 years that Eddie has expired. As someone who has seen alcohol do it's damage, and someone who's seen Ed up close, and talked to those who have surounded him, it's clear that there's a rough road ahead. There has been serious damage done and the abuse has taken it's toll. I only hope good things from here on out for our guitar hero.
