    Default Viva vegas

hey, back in town from vegas and had a great fucking time, literally!

anyway, im so swamped here at the office, i will file my report for the viva fest tonight or tommorrow , when i get the damn time.
there are some serious questions we need to ask, and some things to finalize but it doesnt look that difficult. im also thinking that the big name casino's may not be the way to go yet..but it can be done.
i still have a couple more places to call, and i sat with a few places out there and got a decent sense of dollars..and it will leave us with some decisions ..mainly on when..as in during the week or the weekend and when , as in spring(their busiest time) or the summer(their slowest time), availability, etc.
    tune in tommorrow for more.
what's this i hear that Ed and Al are releasing an 8 song instrumental?

I think the best way to proceed right now is to have this as a running conversation.
The details, as presented to me in Vegas, basically were straightforward, with what i see as simple choices and then proceeding from there.
The biggest question simply comes down to WHEN.
The hard facts are that Vegas gets booked real easy and quickly in the spring. I know we initially said that was when we wanted to go, but it looks to me like that is going against the grain.. we will meet resistance in every aspect along the way, such as room avail., room rates, attention to detail, avail. of function space, etc.
The only caveat i have is that i havent had the time to really get into a good conversation with places like harrah's, or imperial palace, etc, where im sure the rates will be much better..in fact, im thinking those places are gonna end up as our ticket..but we have a little bit of time still..
and that leads me to another thing up front.
Let's use the Mirage as an example. First of all, most of the major casino's are owned by the same people..either MGM, who owns a pile, such as MGM, Mandalay,Mirage, etc..so they are all pretty much in lockstep w/ each other in the details. So we'll use Mirage as the model for the 'Major Casino's' and then we'll use one of the little places as another choice model.
In the case of the main places, If we are going in the spring, we have til @ oct..early November to have all our decisions made, 30% of our moneis turned in, etc..in other words, we have to act quickly or we get shut out. Spring time is convention time and space is not only at a premium, it becomes scarce quickly.
On the other side, if we choose the summer..July or August, we have plenty of time..at least until january, to really get the ball in motion.
One thing is certain. Room blocks are going to be a reality for two main reasons:
    1. insuring uniform rates AND availability and
    2. what i see as more important, universal help from the casino in arranging EVERYTHING, including an agent to handle all reservations, a person to assist in all other arrangements, such as convention space for our big get together, assistance with everything functioning smoothly while there, a problem solver, discounts on function equip, etc. In other words, if we do it piecemeal--that is, everything as individuals, we might as well be single people on a trip-
I will say this--all of the main places said there was NO room rate discount to really speak of..even with room blocks..they simply dont need to give discounts to fill their rooms. But one further example of why we should do blocks, beyond all the cooperation from them, was that, for example, the Mirage offered a full VIP suite at no charge and VIP treatment for the Man himself, should we be able to get him to come(dreaming? maybe, maybe not)-at least we can offer that as a carrot.

Here's prelim rates, using the Mirage again as an example..
    spring time: sun-thurs rates..$179/night, fri-sat-$249-299/ night
Summer time, july or august: sun-thurs-@ $149/night, fri-sat-$179-$229 night
to me, its obvious, but im not the boss.
i can tell you from personal experience, ive been to vegas at least ten times, all times of the year, and when vegas is packed, it aint nearly as much fun as when its not..and i should also say that "packed" is a relative term..its always busy..but when its packed, for example, there's no such thing as even a $10 table game..generally they start between $15-$25 early, and secondly, they are all packed.

So to get this conversation started, and i know this is just a start and not a lot of info, but we really need to come to a concensus on WHEN.
in any case, we can do it anytime we want..our choices will simply be different..

so lets get to the debate of WHEN and get some questions and discussion going..

my vote is for Summertime, which actually is VH time anyways......

Wow what a detailed yet somewhat interesting post.

Sounds like either spring or summer, it's gonna be packed. And except for spring being hot and summer being hotter, I guess it doesn't really matter all that much. If it's in the summer, I'm gonna have to know when so I can plan around it, if I can. Summer's a kinda busy time.

Summer festivus, from the sounds of things.

Oh well. Great job on the recon!!

Fuck it - spring is hot too, and they have air conditioning, so summer works. Only hitch for me is if it coincides/collides with my vacation on Cape Cod, can't really mix the two. So, I'll throw my 2 cents in on dates at the appropriate time, and then live with what the "masses" decide

Since, you know, I'm aware that if I don't go, it's not really a party

Summer's even better for me (no skool!), and probably for most other people too!

What about the Hard Rock Hotel? That seems like it'd be fitting.....
    "Suck a fat one, faggot."
-MikeL, showing off that sharp wit of his.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

    Summer works for me.

pert the only way to go is with a planner with the hotel. That is a certain! That would probably end up being the person at the hotel you book with btw. Then that person will have backup help if they can't be there.

jan, Hardrock is one of the places I gave pert I believe. But it's not on the strip.
