    This was kinda cool...

Saturday, Aug 20, a classmate of mine was killed in a horrible traffic accident. He and his wife were supposed to be front row at the Kenny Chesney concert Tuesday with two other people. Instead, he was to be buried that day.

So his sister-in-law called the big Country radio station here (US99) and asked if she could auction the tickets off on the radio and give the proceeds to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. They held the auction on Tuesday morning and people were bidding around $4000. One of the first-on-scene firemen even bid. Turns out, Jaime's (the deceased) business partner bid $25,000 - all of which goes to St. Jude's. Then he turned around and requested that the fireman who was out-bidded get the tickets to use with his spouse and another fireman. How cool was that? Tragedy turned into people being incredibly kind.

I hate how the media constantly reports conflict, adversity, and despair. They report such a small fraction of human kindness. I wonder how the world would be if that fraction was reversed.

That's awesome! Kudos to them, and yeah, the news should report on more of this type of stuff. Uplift the spirit rather than bring it down!

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

How inspiring!! We need a lot more heart warming stories like this. A new channel of "good news TV". Maybe then the example would be followed more. Thanx for telling this story.

People are good, despite the nonsense on the news. Two examples:

I work at a treatment center for teenaged girls who have severe emotional and behavioral issues - we typically have about 100 here at any given time. Most of them have been physically and sexually abused. Every year we print a Christmas wish list in the local papers since many of these girls have nothing for the Holidays - about a third of them spend Christmas at our facility, they don't have families to go home to. We keep the donated gifts in a large training room. When you walk in the room the week before Christmas, it's simply stunning. Bag upon bag, piles and piles of brand new gifts for the girls donated by the local community. In fact, last year the local Barry Manilow (yes, you read that right) fan club prepared 100 gift bags with identical teenage girl appropriate gifts for us. That was a LOT of time and money on their part. It literally brings tears to your eyes when you walk into the room and realize the time, money, and effort that went into these donations. Amazing.

Second example - today the local sports talk radio station in our area is doing their annual Jimmy Fund telethon to raise money. They are partners with the Red Sox, who also partner with the Jimmy Fund. They will auction off all kinds of tickets and other goodies, and also just take donations. They'll raise over a million dollars today. In fact, two years ago, George Steinbrenner called in and donated $25k.

These two events in my little corner of the world tell me that most people are good, despite the negativity of the news. I don't even watch the news anymore, their choices of what to report disgust me.

That's what I'm saying. I'm sick and tired of the crap they report. Like the situation in Iraq. I get regular emails from a relative there who is a sergeant. He tells me the media has it all wrong and we really are doing good there. I used to watch the news for the weather, but even they can't get it right anymore!!

Both you and IED put up great posts it was good to read them.

And this is a wonderful one also. I wish more of these hit the news. I'm glad your relative lets you in on things over there to see the other side of things. It can't all be bad over there.

Actually, I'm scared to death for him and his unit. They see fire every day. Sometimes fights last 6 hours. But even he says they are making a big differnece with the people and we are doing a good thing. I can't wait to get out of there, but if we leave too early, then all those soldiers died in vain. But that's fodder for another thread!

There's an idea - a Good News only thread

I hear ya. That would be a good thing to have! A good news thread! Wonder how long we could get it to be.

How long before he comes home? He has a great outlook though doesn't he. I've met plenty of soldiers that know what is going on over there is for the good. But everyone is entitled to there own opinion. Just wait, someone will turn this into a political jerk thread now that we expressed pro opinions.

Well it's great to hear something positive for once. How surprising that it didn't receive wider coverage from the "news" outlets.

Thanks for the uplifting story tho. So it's not all bad out there I guess despite some people's worst efforts to make it that way.
