Could III have been more well received if...?

I'm sitting here watching LWAN, which I think we can all agree, is a phenominal show... And I was reminded of something. VH didn't do any videos for 5150, cuz they wanted the fans to see Sammy with VH for the first time in a concert presence- which worked really well right? Well, for any of you who saw the III tour- you all remember how amazing Ed and the boys were. I mean- how great was it to see those songs from the Dave era played live BY Ed Alex and Mike? And Gary actually did a damn good job covering them. And remember how crisp and "on time" Ed was with EVERY FUCKING NOTE he played? I've never seen a better performance by him which is saying a lot- especially as I'm sitting here watching LWAN as I type... So if they had done the same thing for the III tour- could it have been more well received than it was? They could have done a live video or HBO show at the same time they released the LP. Could this have worked?

Well, the actually did do videos for 5150. BOBW from LWAN was aired all over MTV. Dreams.

I don't think it would have worked for III though. Why? The reason the three tour was killer was they played old tunes. That was really the only reason in my book. There really wasn't anything good enough to tote as a good reason to go buy III. Year to the day was a great live performance but they did Ed's solo in the middle of it, but even if they didn't, it was too long for video anyways. As weird as the video was for....whatever that one song was called, I don't think they could have done any better with a live version of it for video. Once....again, I don't think that's a good live video option. Josephina and Fire in the hole would both be good options even though a lot of people didn't like Josephina. I personally thought it was a highlight of the concert.....but it didn't include the whole band. Just Gary and Ed. That leaves fire in the hole as the only viable marketable option from that tour/album. I'd say you could maybe do a good live video from that....but of what? Gary trying to get all queer with the camera? For a VH video? No thanks.

III was just not meant to be.

As a Van Halen act. They should have continued just as a 'band', at least true fans would have something to listen to.

How do you label a "true" fan??
One who would purchase a steaming load of fecal matter pressed into a shiny cd and marketed as an effort from Eddie under the VH Band Banner?

The major problem with Van Halen III isn't the fact that they did a couple of videos or even that Gary is the man behind the microphone. The real problem for all but us die-hard (don't matter who's singing) VH fans is the fact that Ed went really of in another direction with the music. Maybe the songs that made up VH 3 were ideas Ed had had for a long time and didn't fit with either Dave or Sammy. Judging Dave, Sammy and Gary equally aside from VH contributions, and judging on vocal range and ability, Gary is the best "singer" of the three IMO. As much as I enjoy VH 3 for what it is and what the band meant it to be, I was really hoping to hear the Gary Cherone from the Extreme classics "Decadance Dance" and "Rest In Peace".

Simply put Ed ventured to far away from the classic VH sound and at the same time was (subconsciously?) trying to get Gary to sound as close to Sammy as possible. Has anyone else wondered what any of those tracks might of turned out like if Sammy had written the lyrics and sang on them?

He tried something different... He didn't want to get old and obviousally
    got tired of being repetitive..

What would the lyrics have been like? LIkely more cheese and generic.

How bout "Dirty Water Dog" ? I thought that had potential... It had a classic feel to it- although it was missing the "Dave" ingredient... But still, I though it had promise...
