Default Play the music, pay the money

    http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.d...te=printpicart

Play VH's "Jump" and 4 others and pay ASCAP $327 or get sued.

IMO $327 seems steep for playing 5 songs, but I'm not in the business and don't know how it works...

So you have to pay 327 bucks to play 5 songs? What a rip off!

I'd think it would only help promote the bands.

Thus sayeth the rule of ASCAP "You play for public, you pay".

This is old news, ASCAP has gone after bars and other places where people gather like restaurants and pizza parlors. They win every time.

My old boss finally got cable-piped in music because the songs were licenced for "backround music" in retail businesses. The monthly fee allowed you to play the songs, today you'd know it as XM radio. It's silly because if we were playing FM radio then there would be no problem, but if I popped in my Van Halen and somebody reported me then they could fine the store for unathorized use.

Even bars that have live bands that play cover songs can be sued. In fact, this is why there is a growing number of clubs that front bands that play originals only.

It sucks, but thems the rules.

Yes, old news that if you play the music, you have to pay the fees. However, I never really knew how much those fees were until now.

Assuming the 5 songs are of equal value, that means that to play "Jump" one night, it'll cost ya $65.40 --That seems pretty damn outrageous to me.

If you get permission - in writing - it's usually much much less. I don't know how much. Those amounts are punative.

That's not how I read the story:

the team should have paid $327 for each of the seven games in which it played the songs.

    and

The copyright-infringement suit seeks $750 to $30,000 for each violation.

The punative would be the $750 to $30,000 from that....right?

Typically speaking, the typical bar typically pays $750-$2000 annually to acquire proper licensing. Next time you walk into the "big" bar in town, look for the yellow triangle on the door. ASCAP.

This increased ballbusting is a direct result of high speed internet and downloading music.

I know I am guilty of downloading music....it's free!
What I meant by the Ulrich comment is that he had that little spat with Napster. I am assuming his bitching might have lead to this ASCAP live music cover songs at bars etc....just a poke at a punk. That's all.

I knew what you meant...I have a feeling its more to with the industry losing milions of dollars to illegal downloading and not that whiney ass bitch. I haven't bought a new Cd in 5 years and I have never had so much music.(all legal downloads of course)

The industry is getting their money from legal downloads. It's karaoke that is killing the music industry.

Don't get me to start ranting again about supporting live music! HAHA!
Go see a live band at any bar you like, this will show the bar owner, regulars and the people that just show up to see a live band that you mean business. I hope your band means business, especially if you complain about kaarookee taking YOUR business away. Karoake has a place and time (Mondays and Wednesdays). Live music should belong to Fridays and Saturdays....but who the heck am I to say?

I have no problem with ASCAP or BMI, they are actually collecting monies for the ARTISTS, as opposed to record company's keeping 95% of the profits from album sales.

Your business is using your music to help make money. It's called licensing, and it's right. BTW, if you really enjoy an artist and you want them to continue having a career, buy their album. But downloading to try shit out and and finding rare gems is kool too..........
