What do you boys think of Explorers?

Well I rarely play anything without a whammy, and I kinda wanted to get an Explorer. I still have my first real good guitar, which is an '83 Les Paul Standard in cherry red that I got in 1989. But I haven't touched the thing in 5 years, so I am finally going to get rid of it. I mean yes it's a Paul, but I never play the thing, and I'm sick of it sitting around collecting dust. I'm not the kind of guy who just collects guitars really, I like to play them.

So anyway, I think I want to get an Explorer. The store near my house has a sweet Trans Black Explorer Pro that I guess they don't make it anymore. They want $1,400 for it, but I know I can get them down. But I'm not worried about that or the price. I should get enough by selling the Paul anyway.

What do you guys think of Gibson Explorers in general for those that have one or have played one?

Just something different to get that I might actually play. I know not everyone likes that look, but I think they're cool. And I would like something without a whammy, I think my playing has become too dependent on it at times, so something I can play once in a while without one would be a good thing.

Yeah the Pros are mahogany bottoms, maple tops. So all good there.

Actually I put the Paul on Ebay to see what happens.

It's in good condition, it's not mint by any stretch, I mean I played it a lot when I first got it. But over the years, I switched to Kramer-type guitars so I had little use to play the Paul.

Nice guitar almost looks like my 1994 100 anniv. Les paul studio from the pictures but mine is near mint. Has great tone with gold hardware with little wear. I dont play it that much but I myself is getting away with whammys also so I know how you feel, you can do some much with them but thats it..

Yeah I mean it looks fine, and it's clean, and it plays great, just has the nicks and scratches you know of wear and tear. It didn't sit in a glass case.

I mean I love my old Kramers, my Wolfie, and my EBMM's but I just want to try to something else for a change, and I'm just not into playing that Paul anymore.

Guy in my band has an ESP M2, very nice guitar. Great tone, very easy to play. I forgot what he said he paid for it, 6 or 7 years ago, maybe $1,900. I'm not a Fender guy at all. I had an American Strat maybe 12 years ago, and I hated the thing. I just don't dig on that thin sound, so I got rid of it. Although as I get older, now I think I'd like to get a real nice Strat just to have. Guess I'm mellowing.

Yeah I guess a little girl will do that to you. Teles I do like, I've often considered getting one. I played a G & L one years ago that was like butter. But yeah that's my fear with the Explorer, that I'm gonna burn out on it real quick.
