Default Shopping For A New TV? Any advice?

I have done my homework and have decided on a microdisplay, in the 50" range. But the technologies have me guessing: DLP, LCD or plasma. They all seem to have their pros and cons. This set will be strictly for viewing, broadcats TV and DVDs, no, or very little, gaming. I am leaning towards a fairly new technology from JVC: HD-ILA. Anyone familiar with it?
    http://www.jvc.com/Presentations/HDILA/g886.html

My cable company, Time Warner only offers a handful of channels in HD. What do non-HD channels look like on an HD set?

My best deal is from HH Gregg. They seem reputable, but have never bought anything from this store.

Any input, experiences or advice greatly appreciated.

    Buckeye,
I just went through the same thing. I started a thread HERE to get some advise. Some guys here gave me some great advise

With my digital cable service (Comcast) They have many digital channels but most of the common channels are still analog. I'll see if I can get you more info...

    Good luck

www.avsforum.com is the perfect resource for that. The wealth of knowledge, information, and opinion there is pretty intimidating!

Thanks guys. Trying not to duplicate threads, I seached the forum first. Must not have used the right search terms.

MikeL, you are right the AVS forum is intimidating.

So, Axe, how are you liking the Mitsubishi? Any problems? Get digital cable?

I've also started a thread on this a while back, anyway we (my family) have been wondering which one to buy and dude, no LCD or plasma beats DLP in quality in the same price range (and not even in a higher one). We've got our LG for $2000 and the picture is so pure it's unbelievable, while with LCDs and plasmas I could noticed pixels or other bugs here and there. The only disadvantage of projection TVs is that you have to change lamp quite often (but our costs like a hundret bucks, with a 2-years warranty), and the picture gets a bit darker if you watch it from an angle of ... 130 degrees or more . So practically it's vivid from any viewpoint.
But it all depends on models. LGs are really good with projection TVs while every Toshiba, Sony, Thomson or Samsung I've seen sucked. Get the one you feel most towards to, but read some reviews on the internet, they could be very useful.

Before you buy, check Best Buy. Often they run "double rewards" on TVs The 54" I bought was $1499.
They gave me a certificate for 105$ (still waiting on it )
The TV itself is great, for a rear projection tv. It took a little getting used to the aspect ratio on HDTV's. When you "stretch" the picture to view the full screen, it either distorts the picture or chops off the edges and you can not read the "crawler" (if the channel has one).

I have digital cable and I am not liking it so much. The channels I watch most are not digital. I'm thinking about going satelite.

What is the proper viewing distance for a 52"? Is there a standard ratio of feet away per inches of screen?

Well, I bought this JVC HD-ILA, 52". It was delivered a week a go tomorrow and I absolutely love it. I have about 10' feet viewing distance and am still tinkering withthe settings. I have never experienced a brighter, cleaner picture. Discovery Channel HD is like looking through a window. Sports in High Definition....WOW! Baseball and preseason football look tremendous. Can't wait for college and NFL football to start!

I highly recommend this set and/or technology to anyone.
