    Default Recent USA Sales Numbers

    http://www.melodicrock.com/

SALES FIGURES - A RUN DOWN FROM THE USA:
Occasionally I get the chance to offer some feedback on CD Sales and see what titles have sold what. It's next to impossible to gauge worldwide sales numbers, but one organization does monitor US sales numbers and it is these numbers we are having a peak at today.
In the US, all official sales figures are tallied by a company called Nielsen Soundscan. The figures gathered by Sounscan come from reporting stores across the USA and are deemed reliable enough for Billboard to use as their official supplier for data for their charts, including the USA Top 200 Albums.
Before you read the figures - a few words of explanation. These figures are USA only, not worldwide numbers. Many titles are also available via different labels in Europe, those sales numbers are unknown.
A few side notes are placed next to some of the titles - please also take those notes into consideration.

Following up on yesterday's Def Leppard numbers - one site reader asked why Leppard's Slang and Rock Of Ages (2CD Compilation) had been certified Gold by the RIAA, but neither was listed as selling the required 500,000 units. Here is the explanation: "RIAA certifications are based on how many units are shipped, not how many are sold. In the case of Slang, it means that the label shipped 500,000 or more copies. But only 361,000 sold through to consumers. Obviously, the label took a lot of returns -- This is a good example of the classic record industry joke - "ships platinum, returns gold."
As far as the Greatest Hits goes, for multi-CD sets, the RIAA multiplies by the number of CDs in the set when calculating the certifications. So a 2 CD set only has to ship 250,000 to go Gold (500,000 would equal platinum), and 4 CD box only has to ship 125,000, etc."

Speaking of sales figures, have to pimp my bro's band again. They have a distribution deal with Target and in just short of 6 months, they've already sold 29,000+ copies of their album. Not bad...

Personally, I think BOBW should have sold a hell of a lot more. I think if the band kept it together, it would have sold over 1,000,000. Plus, if they added some different songs and removed some others, it would have done better.

Diamond Dave selliing 15,676 is just the saddest thing.

Dokken has three titles on there that have all sold more than Dave? Dokken?? They were NEVER any good, were never as big as Dave, and should have no better look at the basket than Mr. Roth!

Gene Simmons has sold twice as many records as Diamond Dave too! Huh??

Brides of Destruction have sold more than double what Diamond Dave has??

    Dio? Styx?

There's just no reason for Dave to be this off the radar! Off the radar, sure, but not THIS off the radar!

Dave deserves more than his share of the blame for this, but that doesn't make it any less sad or ridiculous!

Dave's decision to do an album of eclectic covers probably didn't help. I don't know how many copies DLR Band sold, but I bet it was more in line with some of the other albums you mentioned. It's pretty tough to change styles midstream, sort of like when Pat Benatar's audience had dwindled and she put out a blue record that bombed. Dokken may only have 20,000 fans left but they give them what they want to hear. If you're gonna try to change thing up this late in the game you can expect there may be a lot of resistance. Dave should just continue to put out hard rock/blues based music like he is known for. If he did, I bet he could sell 50,000 copies no problem--not that that's any great shakes.

Is that number right for For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge? Almost 3 million? And why is just that album listed and not the others?

It seems right. It was certified triple platinum last year but that's shipped not sold. So that figure seems fairly accurate.

At this point, I think the content of the album is secondary to the fact that Dave has fallen so far off the map. I doubt anybody could tell you what Dave's last album was called, so they'd certainly have no idea whether it was covers or originals, hard rock or lounge tunes.

I find Diamond Dave to be very 'Dave'. Meaning, if you are aware of Dave, and like what he brings to the table as an artist, this album will be right up your alley.

Problem is, people just aren't aware of Dave anymore.

If Dokken, 8 million years past their time in the spotlight, can sell more records than David Lee Roth, then Dave has done a lot of things wrong. There's no way he'll ever have a gold record again on his own, but 15,676?

That's true too. From a lot of comments at this site though, some people still aware of Dave really didn't like Diamond Dave or give it a shot.

Anyway, if I'm Dave and I used to produce albums that sold in the millions, I could probably give a rat's ass between 15,00 and 50,000 copies. Sort of like after Jordan left the Bulls, I'm sure it didn't matter whether they won 20 or 30 games in a season. It still sucked.

Pretty sad state of affairs when rock albums fail to sell even 100,000 units where rap and hip hop are doing salesi n the 1,000,000's ...

Bring back the 70's, man even the 80's .... Glad I grew up in those eras and not the current climate.
