Default Yes I Am Going To Say It - Coverdale For VH

    Hey All,

OK, first of all - I want Sammy back in VH. But for sake of arguement, let's say they have to go for singer #4. David Coverdale is the absolute choice. Let me explain why for those that think Coverdale is cheese.

First of all, from the Whitesnake concerts that I have seen this year and from the numerous reviews - David Coverdale has lost nothing vocal wise and Whitesnake completely blows away all of the 80's hair metal types touring now - including Motley Crue (but then again, Vince could never really sing). Having said that, it is a fact that David Coverdale sings and performs better than most NEW rock singers today and from the last 10 years. Jeez, even Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell sound like Coverdale to me at times.

If you don't like Coverdale based on the brief period of his career, that he was taken with the whole hair metal thing (because Whitesnake was not about that for the majority of their career if you know WS) - than that is your problem. He is clearly the most talented of the "name" rock singers that VH could get and that is a fact. When the Coverdale rumors were floating around - Eddie and Alex, were moronic to have not considered it and met with Coverdale just to chat.

And for those that live in the fantasy world and think that David Coverdale is a Robert Plant rip off - you know nothing. Whitesnake 1987 (and Still of The Night in general) is the only Zeppelin rip off as Whitesnake was more of a boogie blues/rock band ala Foghat and not Zeppelin. Coverdale has always sung that way - way back before Zeppelin was huge (if any of you have heard his Guvernment demo's from the 60's - which got him the Deep Purple gig in 1971).

Lastly and I completely believe this - if Coverdale does do a new Whitesnake album with Doug Aldrich, Reb Beach, Uriah Duffy and Tommy Aldridge. It will be the return of rock again. I just thought and was praying to my personal God, that it was going to be VH doing a full album with Sammy - that would be the return of rock.

I'm glad I wasn't drinking tonight otherwise the thread title itself would've made me puke...

    Sorry, bro...

Not trying to put you down, but they'd be better off doing an INXS type of thing than a Coverdale/VH sham...

Coverdale (and Glenn Hughes) didn't join Purple until "Burn", and that sure as hell wasn't in 1971.

Granted, it's an interesting idea, as Coversale is indeed a blues-based singer.

The problem is that VH is blues/boogie "derived", which is not the same thing.

I'd venture to say the outcome would sound more like a "Here I Go Again" version of Whitesnake.

Then again, if one could get Jimmy Page to produce, we might wind up with "Van Ledsnake", which is intriguing and horrifying at the same time.

I don't think there is a respectible singer alive who would want to get involved with Van Halen in their current state.

    a) No matter who you are, half of the fans are going to hate you.

    b) Apparently, Eddie isn't the most pleasant guy to be around right now.

Forgive me if this is out of line, but who do you consider to be Van Halen here in the year 2005 ?

Is it Ed and Al ?

    Ed, Al and Mike ?

To me there really isnt a Van Halen, and hasnt been for some time, really.

    At least since around "BOV1".

    For me, anyway.

I'd like to see them work together under another name. At this point it should not be a big deal for the Van Halen bro's to either call it "The Van Halen Bro's", "EVH/AVH", or something else.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - a Coverdale/VH collab would rock like a mutherfucker!

Unless Eddie gets some help, the only way they'll ever get another singer is to get another ass-kisser like Gary, who will do whatever Eddie says and put up with his moods/drunkenness.

No REAL lead singer, such as Hagar, Roth, Coverdale, etc., is going to put up with his crap at this time.

The really good frontmen are pretty ballsy, and are strong-minded in the studio.
This won't fly with EVH at this time, as he wants total control.
So there will be a problem with anyone who they try to work with that's worth a crap.

Oh, and whoever said Vince Neil couldn't sing live is wrong.....when he was drunk all the time, yes...he sucked.
But I saw him when he opened for VH and he was awesome.
I think Vince Neil would be perfect for VH is they chose to go with another singer.
He's got the party-time reputation, would likely sing all the old Dave stuff, and could do a respectable job on the Hagar songs, too. Doubt he'd want to take a crack at "Dreams', but who wants to hear that live anymore anyway?
Problem is, if he's still sober, then you still have the problem of Eddie not being sober.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Coverdale is completely wrong for Van Halen, that is a BAD idea.

I liked Coverdale in Deep Purple and Whitesnake, but agree he wouldn't be a good fit for VH. I remember hearing the rumors back in 2000 and was shaking my head. Just because someone's a good singer doesn't necessarily mean they're appropriate for certain groups.

However, if Ed wanted to do an album with Coverdale under a different group name, that might be interesting to listen to. If the two had creative chemistry, fans could be in for a treat. But unless it's Sammy or Dave, drop the "Van Halen" group name.
