    Default Japanesse Bonus Tracks

What the heck is with these and why do they always get to have the bonus tracks to any American album? Why do I feel that we're being ripped off?

I once heard that they get these extra tracks, because CDs (like anything else) are very expensive in Japan, so they get this little bonus for buying an album.

I heard that if you are an American band, and you want to sell your stuff to them, Japan asks that the band give them an extra track. That’s what I heard from a retail guy.

It's only a few extras, not that big a deal, it's only happened a few times.

The live versions of Mine All Mine and Eagles Fly on the box set.
Hot for Teacher on BOV 1.
    Crossing Over on Balance.

And somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure That's Why I Love You was released on the Japanese version of III.

pretty much summed up...american bands have to work a little harder since CDs are more expensive over there so they have to add a little more. alot of the time the stuff is left off for a reason.

CD's are more expensive in Japan, they can get American CD's for less price, so they add the BONUS TRACK to force them to buy the Japanese Cd.

"That's Why I Love You" was not on the Japanese version of VH III, it has never been given an official release. However, the track was included on some very early CD-R test pressings of the album...

So really, 'we' have missed out on 3 tracks, 'cause HFT isn't really one, since we all had 1984 already, and two were live, and one of those was a Sammy solo track.

Basically, it comes down to the Japanese getting Mine all Mine live and Crossing Over.

There's always Ebay. I've picked up a few copies of the import Balance.

Keep in mind, many of these "Bonus" tracks are throw aways that weren't good enough for the domestic release...

    Ding, we have a winner!

In the seventies, entire albums were released in Japan, that were not released here. Nothing really special, Deep Purple were notorious for the practice (usually shitty live albums).

This changed drastically when Cheap Trick released "Live At Boudokan" for the Japanese audience only. Import sales in the U.S. were so big that Epic Records were forced to issue it domestically, pushing back the release of "Dream Police" for nearly a year.

I actually wound up purchasing an import single of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song", solely for the B-side "(Hey, Hey What Can I Do"), around 1978.

When I finally got it, it sucked to find out that it was a domestic release, shipped to Japan, then Re-Imported !

This is indeed why the practice of Japanese bonus tracks is common. The Japanese licensee/manufacturer has the rights for that market for a certain album. But like you said, it's actually cheaper for fans to buy a U.S. import. So, in order to induce the fans to buy the Japanese version, they get extra tracks.

I agree that it's not fair that we don't get those tracks on the standard U.S. releases - particularly with American bands - but this is really record company politics. In most cases, the bands have no say about this. I believe this is why, in many cases, that the "bonus tracks" end up being unreleased live versions of songs from other albums.

On the other hand, we should have gotten "Crossing Over" on the U.S. Balance album, rather than have to buy the "Can't Stop Lovin' You" CD single or the Japanese import. Or, at the very least, they could've made the Japanese import cheaper than the U.S. version...

I kiss living in Japan and buying Japanese CD's. Many also came with bonus CD's, in addition to bonus tracks.

Lots of great packaging, alternate covers, different versions, "Japan-issue only", and other stuff you'd have to pay around $40 and up to have imported here for purchase.

I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen. ."
