    Default Producers

One of things that has really bothered me over the past couple of months is how bad I feel the production of the 3 "new" songs is on BOBW. Everything sounds muddled to me, no backing vocals-it just does not sound as good as some of the bands work from the 90's like FUCK or even the new tracks from BOV1.

So lets assume VH does another record with Sammy-or Dave or whoever. Who should they get to produce?? I don't think Glenn Ballard has gotten the best out of the band he needs to go. Mike Clink has done some amazing stuff with Sammy-check out Marching to Mars, awsome sound-Sammy as a solo artist never sounded better. Andy Johns would be great, FUCK is one of the best produced cd's of all time, only problem there is they spent sooo much time working on it they would need someone to come in and keep things moving, maybe reform the team of Andy Johns, Ted Templeman and VH? How about Bob Rock? He did a decent job with Dave on ALAE, it's a decent sounding disk-wonder what he could do with Sammy?? Who else is out there?? Jesse Harms? He's worked as a producer and he's wrote some really cool stuff with Sammy. I think who ever it is they need to tell ed stick to the guitar and keyboards I'll handle production and mixing.

I completely disagree with you. You can't hear the backing vocals? maybe it's your stereo. I think they sound great.

I'd like to hear a VH record produced by.....Van Halen.
Christ, they've been recording long enough in Eddie's backyard you'd think they'd know how to tweak a knob or two.
But in all seriousness I'd like to hear an Eddie/Alex produced album.

I hear backing vocals on the 2nd part of IAT, some on UFB but that's it, none on Learning to See and nothing like the stuff that was on FUCK or Balance or even WACF, not even close.

The 3 new songs have some of the best production Van Halen has had in years.

Don't know what you are talking about.
"I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone

"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and Ive got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth

I gotta disagree with ya only because IMO, I think that outside ear makes a HUGE difference. Someone who is not as attached to the songs as the songwriters to maybe give some direction and constructive criticism.

I wouldn't mind a Bob Rock produced Van Halen album. Aside from the train wreck that is "St. Anger", I really like the sound of his albums. Usually heavy- deep sounding drums and crunchy guitars. Dr. Feelgood, ALAE, The Black Album from Metallica......huge sounds...

Then again, at this point, ANY new Van Halen would be nice

    Brian Eno.
Might seem like an odd choice, but look at some of U2 and Bowie's best
records and you'll see who's behind them.
No? Steve Albini. Even though he'd swear he's just the "engineer".
No? Um, OK. How bout... Me!?
    No? Alright then. Ted Templeman.

I agree with ya that an outside ear makes a huge difference. But, EVERYTHING VH has released has been produced with an outside ear. It'd be nice to hear what they can do when in control with no outside influence.
But yeah, ANY VH would be nice.
Bob Rock is cool. But if they did have to choose someone I'd love to hear them work with Terry Date. That guy has worked on some incredible shit. Everyone from Pantera to Soundgarden to Limp Bizkit to OverKill. Dude's got an amazing ear.

VHIII is 95% produced by Eddie. It was his baby.

VH needs a producer, cause Eddie doesn't always make the best production or content decisions.

A referee...definitely!!! Or so we'd probably think, right?!
It's so funny, and somewhat sad because there are SO many stories and rumors, who really knows what goes on when these guys make a record!?!?
Eddie's too drunk, or Alex can't work with Dave because he banged one of his ex-wives, or Sammy's pissed at Eddie and vice versa, or Dave tried to come back but Eddie's taking forever with his solos and Dave is too whacked out of his mind to put any lyrics down anyway...Plus, he's considering trading in being the greatest rock frontman EVER to become a part time EMT and morning radio show host.
BUT Eddie's got 10 albums worth of material!!! He just can't find a singer.
I guess we should all go by the whole "No news..." thing, but at this point these guys may have already hung it up and just decided to not tell us.

VH3 was a forced, misguided record with a below average(in VH standards) not-too-confident singer. The band was definitely not at their strongest.
If you think about it, the best case of "Van Halen producing themselves" was the first record. Where they played all the songs the way they did live, with hardly any overdubs, or changes in the material. I think a producer could be hit or miss at this point (in terms of the overall sound), the most important piece of the moment is gonna be who's singing.
